PGA Tour Picks – WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational Odds

The stars will shine on the PGA Tour this week at the World Golf Championship FedEx St. Jude Invitational, the most prestigious tournament since the season restart. That title will last all of one week, though, with the season’s first Major, the PGA Championship, up next on the reimagined schedule. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. With 45 of the top 50 golfers in the OWGR competing, the only thing missing is Tiger Woods. Jon Rahm makes his first start since winning the Memorial and taking over as the No. 1 player in the world.  Bookmaker.eu is offering a generous welcome bonus (max bonus $1000)

It’s not a complete surprise that Rahm opened as the betting favorite, slightly ahead of the man he supplanted at the top of the rankings Rory McIlroy. The odds for defending champion Brooks Koepka continue to tumble as his game struggles. He missed the cut last week at the 3M Open and is still hampered by a sore knee. I doubt he would be playing if the injury was too serious. Koepka ups his game in big tournaments and the price is right. With only 78 players invited to the festivities there is no cut line allowing players to overcome a bad outing early. Odds Analysis

Rahm worked out the kinks at the Memorial ending a frustrating run since the season reboot. Can McIlroy follow suit? It isn’t a stretch to think it can happen since he was the hottest golfer on the planet before the COVID-induced layoff. In four starts since the return McIlroy’s best finish is T11 at the Travelers. He placed outside the top 30 in his three other starts.

Now that he’s been bumped from his perch in the rankings maybe the change of scenery will spark Rory. He is in comfortable surroundings after placing fourth here last year. There isn’t much separating McIlory from other golfers down the odds list and while I’m pulling for him there are better value options.

While this is only the second WGC event at TPC Southwind, the course is familiar to a number of players. It hosted a regular Tour event for years before joining the WGC lineup. Dustin Johnson and Daniel Berger each won twice with Berger becoming the fourth player to go back-to-back with triumphs in 2016 and 2017. Berger opened the restart with a win at the Schwab and a T3 at the RBC Heritage.

The course will have a slightly different look this year with additional yardage tacked on to holes three and 17 extending the layout to 7,277 yards at par 70. It’s not a difficult challenge, but it does require every stick in the bag. Koepka was brilliant in all areas last year winning by 3-shots with a 16-under total.

WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational Preview

A strong field of players makes it difficult to select an outright winner. Pick one of the names out of a hat and you’re probably in a good spot. But there are things to look at in order to make a more informed wager. Recent form is always tops on the list and course form can distinguish players from each other. Only 78 golfers were invited seriously limiting the scope of our research.

Onward we go. Rahm is obviously in good form after winning the Memorial two weeks ago. He was so dialed in even a two-stroke penalty in the final round didn’t hurt. DeChambeau had been so good for so long you almost expected something bad to happen. It did with a MC at the Memorial. A win at the Workday a few weeks ago was his fifth top-5 in a run of seven consecutive top-10s prior to the stumble at Muirfield Village. Given his season stats it’s hard to envision DeChambeau going into a slump and he’s excited to show off in front of the best.

Justin Thomas is a stud in these tournaments with a win and a playoff runner-up part of seven top-15s in his last 10 WGC starts. We don’t have to worry about a cut this week and JT didn’t worry about it in four of starts since the reboot. He had three top-10s and a T18 in that stretch.

It’s hard to go against a hot flat stick. Tyrrell Hatton is currently the best putter on Tour helping him to a pair of top-5s in two starts since the reboot. He’s been good for awhile with a win on the Euro Tour and at the Arnold Palmer Invitational within the last year.

WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational Pick: Tyrrell Hatton
Top-5 Lock: Bryson DeChambeau
Top-10 Lock: Brooks Koepka
