PGA Tour Picks – The Masters Odds

With six major championships and a record number of tournaments on the PGA Tour this season, I guess we can thank COVID for something. Originally scheduled for April, the 2020 Masters is the second major of the season and last of the calendar year. Though it’s played in the fall rather than the spring, executives at Augusta National Golf Club are doing their best to keep conditions as similar as possible. For those who don’t like fall weather in Georgia there’s no need to worry since the Masters returns in just a few months.  Bookmaker.eu offers a generous welcome bonus ($1600 max bonus)

Tiger Woods has probably been the longest defending champion. After putting on the green jacket following his 15th major title, Woods has spent the past 19 months enjoying whatever the previous winner of the Masters does. Woods hasn’t finished better than T37 in any event since the restart, but he’s always a threat. After taming Winged Foot to capture the U.S. Open and his first major championship a few months ago, Bryson DeChambeau can be the first player in five years to go back-to-back in a major. He’s positioned as the betting favorite just ahead of OWGR No. 1 Dustin Johnson as the only two players at 10/1 or shorter. Odds Analysis

Not only has COVID affected the Tour schedule it’s also hampered the routines of players. In order to get properly prepped for the final major of the year players had to pick and choose events in which they wanted to play. Not unlike pre-COVID times but unusual in where the events fall on the calendar. And of course the virus hasn’t missed the PGA Tour. The field was reduced by one following the positive test of Sergio Garcia. And DJ makes his second start since returning from his quarantine after testing positive.

Even though DeChambeau hasn’t competed in a month he’s listed as the betting favorite. And it’s hard to argue with oddsmakers on that one. DeChambeau is the most recent major winner toppling the field by six-shots at the U.S. Open where he was the only player to navigate Winged Foot to a below par score. DJ returned from his COVID-induced hibernation last week and showed no signs of rust finishing as co-runner up. The scary thing is that he closed with a 65 getting better as the tournament progressed.

The next wave of players on the odds board is impressive. Rory McIlroy is looking like the player we saw before the shutdown and should be motivated with another shot at the career Grand Slam. Brooks Koepka gets greased up for majors like no other and he’s ready to win his first green jacket after a runner-up showing in 2019. Koepka has won four of the last nine majors he started. And Xander Schauffele is a major champion in waiting. His solo fifth at the U.S. Open was his fifth career top-5 finish in a major.

Odds to Win The Masters at BookMaker.eu

Bryson DeChambeau +705
Dustin Johnson +950
Jon Rahm +1015
Rory McIlroy +1211
Justin Thomas +1215
Brooks Koepka +1418
Xander Schauffele +1420
Patrick Cantlay +2055
Jason Day +2856
Hideki Matsuyama +2860
Bubba Watson +2864
Patrick Reed +3045
Tyrrell Hatton +3066
Collin Morikawa +3250
Tony Finau +3269
Tiger Woods +3269
Matthew Wolff +3269
Webb Simpson +3560
Adam Scott +3711
Tommy Fleetwood +4550
Jordan Spieth +4850
Justin Rose +5000

Bubba Watson and Jordan Spieth are two players who have the numbers at Augusta and stick out as value picks. I’m more inclined to back Watson since recent form is solid, and two wins at this lot is impressive. For those who believe in numerology consider Bubba’s wins came in 2012 and 2014. He also earned a top-5 in 2018, so he likes those even numbered years. That’s obviously not a sound betting strategy, but hey, whatever works. And Bubba has to bubbling with confidence following a pair of top-10s in his most recent starts.

A return to Augusta might be the elixir that cures Spieth’s ills. Three MCs in five starts this season doesn’t speak glowingly of his game, but he’s been a terror at Augusta with a win and three podium finishes while bettering the field scoring average in 20 of 24 rounds played. Tony Finau is another solid player looking for his maiden major victory. A T8 at the U.S. Open was his eighth top-10 that includes four top-5s in a major.

The Masters Pick: Rory McIlroy
Top-10 Lock: Dustin Johnson
Top-20 Lock: Xander Schauffele
