No. 1 Rory McIlroy opened as the betting favorite at online sportsbooks with No. 2 Jon Rahm close behind. McIlroy wouldn’t even be here if not for the lengthy layoff and he’s one of a few golfers to play competitively during the lockdown. McIlroy and teammate Dustin Johnson knocked off Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolf in a charity event last month. All four are included in this week’s lineup. Charles Schwab Challenge
Dates: Thursday, June 11 - Sunday, June 14, 2020
Location: Colonial Country Club, Fort Worth, TX
Opening PGA Tour Odds: Rory McIlroy +786
Charles Schwab Challenge TV Coverage: Golf Channel, CBS

Odds Analysis

It’s hard to argue with McIlroy being the favorite. He is after all the No. 1 ranked player in the world according to the OWGR and put together seven straight top-5 finishes worldwide before the shutdown. This is a weird time, though, with no tournament action in three months and a majority of the field not playing competitively due to the pandemic.

That leaves the entire field in the same boat with the exception of a few players who participated in the made-for-TV charity events. Having the experience of adjusting to what will be the new normal for the time being, McIlroy, DJ, Fowler and Wolff, along with Phil Mickelson, might have a leg up on the competition. It is after all much different than playing a practice round with some buddies.

The odds certainly don’t favor those guys with Lefty and Wolff well down the odds board and Fowler and DJ at over 30 to 1 to win.

Colonial Country Club plays at just over 7,200 yards and isn’t going to scare anyone. The stock par-70 is a perfect course for the Tour to get back in the swing of things with few surprises for the field since it’s been played since the 1940s with few changes. The layout rewards accuracy and consistent ball-striking, but it isn’t penal if players miss the fairways. This likely comes down to which player is best with the flat stick.

Charles Schwab Challenge Preview

This has the feel of a major championship with all the high-end talent assembled. Considering there are over 140 entrants some fantastic golfers are going home early when they miss the cut. There is little time to chisel away the rust which is why guys like McIlroy, Fowler and Johnson should be considered.

Fowler and Jordan Spieth have been inconsistent with their game and I feel like both are ready for a breakthrough. Spieth is a Texan and some of his better moments took place at Colonial. He won here in 2016 and finished as runner-up twice in his previous eight starts. He showed signs of regaining his winning form last year and this could be the venue that gets him back on top.

With only one Tour victory in 40 months, the luster has worn off Fowler. However, he’s another player whose game jives with Colonial and he performed well against McIlroy and DJ at last month’s TaylorMade Driving Relief charity event.

With all the players in the same boat it’s easy to stick with the favorite. And you really can’t go wrong with McIlroy. He was the hottest player around pre-shutdown and he sparkled at the charity tuneup helping his team to victory. That winning taste is all too familiar for Rory. He’s never played Colonial so we’ll see if talent wins out over course experience.

One player feeling disrespected is defending champ Kevin Na. He toppled the field last year winning by four shots but faces a much stiffer group this time around. Colonial has been Na’s playground recently with three scores of 62 or lower in his last eight rounds. The short game plays well on this layout and Na can give some of the bigger names a bad time if he’s on.

Charles Schwab Challenge Pick: Rory McIlroy
Top-5 Lock: Jon Rahm
Top-10 Lock: Rickie Fowler

Iowa State: Are They The Underdogs To Look For In March Madness?

They may be defined as “underdogs” or “Cinderella teams”, a term that is usually saved for teams that have little to no chance of winning even a single game during the NCAA Tournament. Teams like Loyola Marymount (1990), George Mason (2006), Davidson (2008), VCU (2011), UConn (2014), and Loyola Chicago (2018) come to mind when conversations turn toward the most surprising tournament runs in recent memory.
