The Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 to win their first Super Bowl in 50 years. It is their second Super Bowl win in franchise history.

The Chiefs entered the fourth quarter trailing 20-10 after allowing 17 consecutive points to the 49ers but they put together two touchdown drives late and prevented their opponent from getting anything on offense. KC’s 10-point comeback is tied for the second-largest in a Super Bowl.

Damien Williams then added late 38-yard score in the final two minutes to seal Kansas City’s third comeback victory of the playoffs. They trailed the Texans 24-0 in the Divisional Round, were down 17-7 against the Titans in the AFC Championship and 20-10 against the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.

Williams ran for 104 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries. He also had four receptions for 29 yards and another score.

Patrick Mahomes didn’t play so well. He completed 26 of 42 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions but he did lead the offense on scoring drives when they needed it them the most.

“It really put in perspective how hard it is to go out there week by week and put up numbers and get wins,” Mahomes told ESPN after the game. “You know it’s a struggle in this league. Teams are coming with their best effort, playing us really hard... I realized this year that it’s better just to find ways to win rather than try to put up all these numbers.”

Mahomes joined Emmitt Smith as the only players to ever win a Super Bowl and MVP before turning 25. He is the first quarterback to do it. At 24 years, 138 days, he is also the youngest quarterback in history to be named Super Bowl MVP. The talented signal-caller is also the youngest player ever to win an NFL MVP award and a Super Bowl. Mahomes is the youngest quarterback in the Super Bowl Era (since 1966) with at least 10 passing touchdowns in a single playoff.

This is the first Super Bowl for head coach Andy Reid in his 21-year career. Mahomes noted that he wanted to win the game for Reid.

“The work that he has put in every single day, everywhere he’s been he’s had success, so we want to get him that Super Bowl, but we understand it’s a process, Mahomes explained to Cheat Sheet. “First off we’ve got to come in, have a great practice today, play great this weekend, and then try to give ourselves a chance to try to get in that game and try to get ourselves that trophy.”
