New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, initially objecting to the legalization of online sports betting in the Empire State, has had a change of heart.

Cuomo intends to address the subject next week, according to a report by the New York Daily News.

"New York has the potential to be the largest sports wagering market in the United States," Cuomo told the paper.

He added that legalizing online sports betting would allow the state "to keep millions of dollars in tax revenue here at home, which will only strengthen our ability to rebuild from the COVID-19 crisis."

Cuomo will ask the New York State Gaming Commission to seek proposals for offering mobile sports betting and to ensure operators of gaming apps include protections against addiction and abuses.

Residents in neighboring New Jersey have been able to place sports wagers through their phones and computers since 2018. Over $872 million in online bets were placed in November with the state set to overtake Nevada as the country's largest betting market. $30 million of that went to the state of New Jersey in the form of taxes.
