We’re only in Week 3 of the NFL season but the winner of Monday night’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys will have sole possession of first place in the NFC East. This is a big deal since last year’s division champ finished with only seven wins and at least at the outset the group as a whole doesn’t appear all that much better. Again, it’s early and things can change, but the Cowboys look like a different team with Dak Prescott behind center. After a crushing defeat to the Super Bowl champion Buccaneers in the opener they got in the win column taking down the Chargers. The Boys open the home portion of their schedule seeking their fourth straight win over the Eagles in Big D as a 3.5-point favorite on the NFL betting line.

Odds Analysis

The home team has had the better of this series winning each of the last five games and the Cowboys have the advantage on Monday night which is why they are a 3.5-point favorite. We haven’t had much movement on the line since hitting the board, a sign that bookmakers got this one right. There was a slight uptick for the home team moving to -4, but that was quickly brought back down. Dallas is 3-0 SU and ATS in the previous three meetings in Texas averaging 34.3 points in those games with the OVER at 2-1. The total spiked to 52.5 after opening at 50.5. If it holds it will be the highest total in the last 12 meetings between the clubs.

Philadelphia Eagles

They are better than the four-win dumpster fire last season, we just don’t know to what extent after the first two games. Jalen Hurts had the best game of his brief career completing 27 of 35 for 264 yards and three touchdowns in a 32-6 romp over Atlanta in the opener. The Eagles won outright as a 3.5-point dog. The following week Hurts stumbled against the Niners going 12 of 23 for 190 yards with nearly half of that total coming on one play.

The inconsistent play this year is a carryover from what happened last season. Taking over the starting gig for the final four games Hurts failed to complete more than 57 percent of his passes in any game and had three picks in that stretch. The Eagles were 1-3 including a 37-17 loss to Dallas. Hurts threw for 342 yards but was intercepted twice and sacked three times against one of the worst defenses in the NFL.

After facing two pocket quarterbacks in Tom Brady and Justin Herbert, Hurts throws a wrinkle at Dallas defenders with his ability to scramble and make plays with his feet. He’ll get more than enough chances as Dallas continues to find its identity defensively. While they allowed just 17 points in their win over the Bolts, the Cowboys continue to have issues on defense, especially against the pass allowing 346 yards per game.

Dallas Cowboys

They split their first two games but there is a lot to like about this edition of the Cowboys. They should probably be undefeated heading into this matchup following a tough-luck loss to the Bucs in Week 1. But it’s a lesson they hopefully earned. Leaving too much time on the clock Tom Brady engineered a drive leading to a field goal at the gun giving Tampa the 31-29 victory. There are no moral victories in this game, but the Cowboys got a brilliant effort from Prescott in his return from a devastating ankle injury and the game was much closer than most expected.

With Prescott at the helm last season the Cowboys had one of the best offenses until his injury in Week 5 derailed the season. The defense never caught up and without Dak the Boys floundered. Offense didn’t figure to be an issue and so far the group has held up its end of the deal. Finding balance with the run game the Cowboys amassed 419 yards to beat the Bolts last week and they averaged 435 yards through two games.

Dallas needed help defensively and they added a gem in Micah Parsons. However, the group still gives up big plays due to lack of a pass rush and an inexperienced secondary. They have made up for it totaling six takeaways through two games, which helped thwart several opponent possessions. This game could easily turn into a track meet and the team that wins the turnover battle has a good chance of coming out on top.

Stats wise the Eagles have been better defensively, but they haven’t faced an offense quite like that of the Cowboys. Dallas has the potential to put up big numbers and the Eagles will get chances leading me to back the OVER, even though the number is up there. And Dallas will react to allowing fans.

NFL Score Prediction: Cowboys 32, Lions 20
