Odds Analysis

The Titans are catching 3-points on the current line making them an underdog for just the fifth time this season. That’s actually a position they’ve enjoyed going 3-1 SU and ATS when getting points. Tennessee blasted Detroit last week, 46-25, laying 9.5-points. It was their second straight cover and their fourth in the last five games. The Titans also have payout wins in their last three road games and are 10-4 SU and 7-7 ATS overall. Last week’s game with Carolina was never really in doubt, though the score was much closer than it probably should have been. Green Bay let a big lead dwindle to a 24-16 victory which the Panthers covered by getting 9.5 points. It was the Packers second straight cover loss while laying that many points. With the Titans No. 1 in scoring and the Packers No. 3, there’s a good chance we see some offense. The total opened at 56, the highest on the Week 16 board.

Tennessee Titans

After winning nine games in each of the previous four seasons, the Titans finally got over the hump and registered their 10th win of the year last week. They haven’t clinched a playoff spot and the AFC South title is still up for grabs, so there is a lot to play for over the final two weeks. To make up for a shaky defense the Titans have become offensive. You might find it surprising that they lead the NFL in scoring with 31.1 points per game and rank second in yards with nearly 400 an outing.

The man to watch is Derrick Henry, who is on the cusp of becoming a 2,000-yard rusher. Henry leads the NFL with 1,679 yards and he typically finishes what he starts by scoring a league-high tying 15 rush touchdowns. The Titans have success when Henry does. Over the last two games he’s rushed for 352 yards and over seven yards per carry. He’s also gone for more than 100 yards in five of the last six games.

Toss in the work of Henry along with a career season from Ryan Tannehill and the Titans are on the Chiefs scoring level. They have the same scoring average, but Tennessee has almost 400 fewer total yards. A defense that gives up over 390 yards and nearly 26 points has led to a lot of points. Tennessee has played over the total in five of its last six games and the OVER is 10-3.

Green Bay Packers

Last week’s win over Carolina might have served as a wakeup call. And the Packers didn’t have to deal with the fallout of a loss that typically accompanies those games. The outcome could have been different against a better team, but the Packers won the game, which is all they needed to do. It also kept them in line to post the best record and No. 1 playoff seed in the NFC. That means a little more this season with one additional playoff team leaving only the top seed with a bye.

The Packers have their own balanced offensive attack that ranks eighth in both rushing and passing. And of course they have Rodgers, who has been in big spots before during his career. Rodgers had his worst game of the season in terms of passing yards last week with only 143 yet the Packers still cruised to victory. They scored the first three times they had the football and held on. It was a sign that the Pack could prevail when Rodgers isn’t a significant part of the offense.

That’s a road the Packers don’t want to travel, though, so look for the passing game to be more of a factor this week. Rodgers completes nearly 70 percent of his passes and his 40 touchdown throws lead the NFL. More impressive, though, is his ability to not let anyone but his teammates grab the ball. Rodgers has just four picks, second-fewest in the NFL, and the Packers have only nine turnovers on the season.

By all accounts we should see plenty of points in this game, which would make the OVER a wise play. But I’m going against that since both teams will play a more conventional type of game. Both clubs can run the football and they don’t turn it over, meaning long sustained drives. And a game featuring two powerhouse teams I have to take the points.
