It’s one thing to have a great year and raise the expectations of a fan base. It’s another to maintain that success over the course of a few seasons. The San Francisco 49ers would rather fancy themselves after the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots rather than the 2017 Jacksonville Jaguars or 2018 Chicago Bears. The Niners enjoyed a massive turnaround going from four wins in 2018 to 13 and a Super Bowl appearance last year. They have a loaded roster returning with their projected win total of 10.5 matching New Orleans for the highest in the NFC. The Niners will be the hunted instead of the hunter making the OVER a risky move.

2020 San Francisco 49ers Offense Preview

Jimmy Garoppolo was the missing link. A lack of quarterback talent hurt the Niners during a five year run of non-winning seasons. That included 2018 when Garoppolo went down in Week 3 with a serious knee injury. It actually turned out to be a blessing as the team stockpiled draft picks with all of them playing a role in last year’s turnaround. In his first full season as a starter Jimmy G. was good, but not great.

Instead the offense was led by the second-best ground game in the NFL averaging 144 yards per game. Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida all rushed for more than 500 yards while combining for 15 touchdowns. Mostert was the best of the bunch scampering for 772 yards averaging a league-best 5.6 yards per carry. Breida departed but the team is hopeful they finally get Jerick McKinnon on the field. He has yet to play a regular season game with the Niners after signing as a free agent two years ago.

There isn’t much depth at receiver with Deebo Samuel and Kendrick Bourne penciled in along with first-round pick Brandon Aiyuk. George Kittle has evolved into one of the best tight ends in the league and will be an integral part of the passing game. He led the team with 85 receptions and 1,053 yards on 107 targets. Despite his lack of starting experience Garoppolo was the only quarterback to rank in the top five in touchdown passes, completion percentage and yards per attempt.

2020 San Francisco 49ers Defense Preview

The offense was good, but it was the defense that often carried the team. The group ranked second in yards allowed and eighth in scoring thanks to a menacing front that often overpowered opponents. The defense wilted toward the end of the regular season conceding an average of nearly 32 points over the final four games. They also lost a 10-point lead in the Super Bowl.

Joey Bosa, the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year, anchors the front. He had 47 tackles and nine sacks with his relentless approach. He’s joined up front by Arik Armstead, another of the team’s first-round picks. Armstead led the team with 10 sacks. The Niners couldn’t keep everyone which is why DeForest Buckner is no longer around, leaving a gaping hole up front. Top pick Javon Kinlaw is expected to take the role.

The secondary performed remarkably well, which had a lot to do with the amount of pressure their mates up front generated. We saw things even out near the end of the year and the group can be exposed. Richard Sherman is slotted at one corner, but we saw him get torched in the Super Bowl with younger, faster receivers getting behind him.

2020 San Francisco 49ers Schedule Analysis

There is plenty of talent on the Niners roster that will help them win games. I think last year was the perfect storm for them with a number of draft picks coming into their own, the return of Garoppolo, and a favorable schedule. That isn’t the case in 2020. The NFC West is going to be competitive. The Niners prevailed in two close games with Arizona, Seattle is always a tough out, and the Rams are still a good team.

Following their opener with the Cards, there’s a road trip to New York for consecutive games against the Jets and Giants, which won’t be easy. The Niners also have a tough stretch leading into their Week 11 bye with matchups against the Rams, New England, Seattle, Green Bay and New Orleans. Following their off week there’s another matchup with the Rams, Buffalo, Dallas and a season-ending get together with Seattle that could decide the division and the outcome of this futures bet.

A lot of folks are high on the Niners after their run to the Super Bowl last season. They will compete for the NFC West title and a playoff berth however, if they underestimate the competition they will fall. I’m not as high on Garoppolo as others, he benefitted from a strong run game and a stingy defense and if that isn’t the case in 2020 the Niners will fall short of their projected win total.

Xavier Worthy = Tyreek Hill 2.0?  Perhaps, and if that comes to fruition at any point in the future, the Bills only have themselves to blame.

J.J. McCarthy Drafted Number 3 Odds to Patriots

To be clear, the Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy is pretty certain to land in Minnesota.  But what if the New England Patriots shock us and pick McCarthy at Number 3 before the Vikings get their opportunity at No. 5?
