NFL Betting – Philadelphia Eagles at San Francisco 49ers

Circumstances were much different the last time these teams played. A mid-season encounter in 2017 saw the Philadelphia Eagles hammer the San Francisco 49ers on their way to the first Super Bowl title in team history. The Niners dropped to 0-8 following that setback and acquired Jimmy Garoppolo a few days later starting a franchise turnaround. Fast forward to now and it’s the Eagles looking for their first win after a disappointing tie with Cincinnati last week, avoiding their first 0-3 start since 1999. The Eagles and Niners hook up in the Week 4 edition of Sunday Night Football from Levi’s Stadium with the home team listed as a 7-point favorite.  Bookmaker.eu is offering a generous welcome bonus (max bonus $1000).

Odds Analysis

Through the first three weeks the Eagles have been a disaster on the field and at the betting window. At least they didn’t lose last week getting a late touchdown and extra point to forge a tie. Philly was a 5.5-point favorite on the closing line falling to 0-2-1 SU and 0-3 ATS. Maybe playing as an underdog for the first time will change their fortunes. The Eagles are getting 7-points on the current line. The Eagles are 2-2 SU and 3-1 ATS in their last four games when getting at least a touchdown. Despite a rash of injuries the Niners are getting a lot of attention from the betting public. They opened -5.5 with the spread wagered to its current number. Impressive showings on the road with a makeshift lineup make them an attractive play this week.

Philadelphia Eagles

Going winless through the first three games would normally be a death sentence for the remainder of the season. Few teams have recovered to actually reach the playoffs after such a poor start. The Eagles have the benefit of playing in the worst division in the NFL with no team above .500 entering Week 4. That means Philly is just one win behind Washington and Dallas for the top spot.

In order to contend, though, getting better play from Carson Wentz is a necessity. Granted the offensive line has been a sieve and a number of playmakers have been out, but Wentz needs to make those around him better and he hasn’t. They went over their season scoring average last week against Cincy but still rank 27th with 19.7 points per game. The club is hopeful Alshon Jeffery and DeSean Jackson are able to return this week, two players who can certainly ignite a stagnant offense.

Taking care of the football is another area that can increase offensive production. Philly has turned the ball over a NFL-high eight times with Wentz responsible for seven of them. He’s thrown two picks in each of the first two games and also lost a fumble. The Eagles have only one takeaway and are dead last in the NFL with a minus-7 turnover differential.

San Francisco 49ers

The Niners complained about the turf at MetLife Stadium after a number of players, including Garoppolo and defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas, went down with injuries in a win over the Jets two weeks ago. There were no complaints last week after taking down the Giants and escaping the East Coast with a pair of wins by a combined score of 67-22. “We pulled together throughout the week,” Kyle Shanahan said.

Nick Mullens got the nod in place of Jimmy G. against the Giants leading a near-flawless performance by the offense. Mullens connected on 25 of 36 for 343 yards and a touchdown. The Niners scored on seven of their first eight possessions and didn’t turn the ball over. They wore down a weak defense by possessing the football for nearly 40 minutes. The Niners better not get complacent since the Eagles are statistically better on both sides of the football than the New York teams.

Holding the Giants to 231 yards playing without Bosa, Thomas and Richard Sherman was a significant development. The Niners took advantage of turnover-prone Daniel Jones stopping three Giants’ drives with a takeaway. They also kept New York out of the end zone allowing just three field goals. The NFL’s second-ranked scoring defense and third-ranked total defense will get a stiffer test this week.

The Eagles aren’t as bad as their record indicates and they should get a boost if one or both of Jeffery and Jackson return. They’ve also been solid defensively giving Mullens a different look. SF has showed incredible depth during this chaotic period of injuries, but let’s face it they caught a break playing two inept clubs. Things will be closer on Sunday night so I’m taking the points and backing the visitors.

NFL Score Prediction: 49ers 24, Eagles 21
