It wasn’t that long ago the Philadelphia Eagles were the best team in the NFL. Flying high after their Super Bowl win in the 2017 campaign, the championship window looked wide open. Well, that ended quickly. After winning just four games last season to finish at the bottom of the NFC East, the team underwent a major overhaul firing Doug Pederson and trading Carson Wentz. Oddsmakers are more optimistic about the Eagles’ chances than a lot of NFL pundits. Their season win total is posted at seven, though the juice favors the under. A four-game improvement is going to be tough for a team with a lot of holes and an unproven Jalen Hurts behind center.

2021 Philadelphia Eagles Offense Preview

It’s Hurts’ team for now, but the club brought in veteran Joe Flacco just in case. Hurts showed promise when taking over last season but completed just 52 percent of his throws. While it’s easy to blame the quarterback, the lack of offense was a team effort. Receivers accounted for fewer than 2,100 yards, third-fewest in the NFL, and the offensive line was a mess. Fans wanted Hurts and now they have him. We’ll see how long the honeymoon lasts.

The team addressed a major issue at the draft taking Alabama’s DeVonta Smith with their top pick. Last season’s Heisman Trophy winner was a big-play machine throughout his collegiate career and is an immediate upgrade at the position. The Eagles are expecting more from 2020 first round pick Jalen Reagor, who had only 31 catches in 11 games. New coach Nick Sirianni was Indy’s offensive coordinator for three seasons, which should theoretically help.

Improving on their 28th ranked passing game and 26th ranked scoring unit starts up front. The line was ravaged by injuries last year using a new starting five nearly every game. It’s just hard to get any continuity with constant shuffling. Jason Kelce is a rock at center and keeping guys like Lane Johnson and Brandon Brooks healthy will help. Having an offensive line together for a few games will help the confidence of the team and there should be improvements. But the Eagles aren’t going to lead the league in scoring.

2021 Philadelphia Eagles Defense Preview

The Eagles weren’t much better defensively last season ranking in the bottom third in total yards and points allowed. New coordinator Jonathan Gannon must also fix a group that allowed nearly 126 rushing yards per game. There are a few pieces in place starting with Fletcher Cox, who posted 6.5 sacks and was named to the Pro Bowl.

Unfortunately the best parts of the defense are also the elder statesmen. Cox and Brandon Graham, who led the club with 8 sacks in 2020, are in their early 30s. They will serve as mentors to a young group that will undoubtedly experience growing pains, while also being expected to perform at a high level.

Just how bad was the secondary last season? Darius Slay earned the nickname “No Play” since QBs completed over 76 percent of their passes thrown his direction. Steven Nelson was a big pickup to help at corner, but the group will be as good as the pass rush. Failing to pressure the QB will hang the secondary out to dry.

2021 Philadelphia Eagles Schedule Analysis

I’m not sure the NFC East will be as bad as it was last season. The Eagles were actually in contention for a division title late in the campaign despite their win total. They can’t count on that happening again. The Cowboys, Giants and Football Team all look improved, much more than the Eagles right now and I don’t expect a winning record against those clubs.

We’ll see how good Gannon is at his new job early in the season with games against Dallas, Kansas City, Tampa Bay and Las Vegas in the first seven weeks. That’s a lot of firepower for a defense that had and is likely to still have holes. If they can survive the first part of the schedule things look much better at the end. Five of their final six games are against division opponents with the other a matchup with the Jets.

There is enough front-end talent to win more games than last season. However, with depth issues across the board, an improved division and a tough schedule over the first two months, asking this team to win eight games is a stretch. We still don’t know a lot about Hurts since he took over a floundering team last season. And it’s going to take time for the new staff to get acclimated under the microscope of playing in Philly.
