For a few days at least there will be some sense of normalcy in our lives as rabid sports enthusiasts. That’s because the 2020 NFL Draft is forging ahead on its originally scheduled dates of April 23-25. The lockdown forced by the coronavirus outbreak has shuttered nearly every mainstream sport. With time do dissect the upcoming draft oddsmakers made this a special time for folks looking to throw down with a plethora of prop bets available at BookMaker.eu.

We continue to do our own research and dive into the most important position on the football field. Every team looks for that franchise quarterback in the NFL Draft. Some teams use a first round pick in hopes of landing the coveted player that will change the direction of a franchise. Others, by chance, find that player lower on the draft board. The number of QBs expected to be selected in the first round is set at 4.5 with the under holding a lot of negative juice. You can wager on this prop and many others at BookMaker.eu.

Total Number of QBs Drafted in Round 1 of the 2020 NFL Draft

Over 4.5 ( +448 )

Under 4.5 ( -685 )

Of all the starters or projected starters from last season 20 quarterbacks were drafted in the first round. That doesn’t include Washington or Miami since those clubs never really had a “starter” and used a committee approach early in the season. The point is the position is the most important on the field and players filling the void are usually taken in the first round. A guy like Tom Brady, who was drafted in the sixth round, is an anomaly.

It’s safe to say at this point that LSU’s Joe Burrow will be the first quarterback off the board and his destination is likely Cincinnati. It’s hard to argue with his numbers that led to an undefeated National Championship season and Heisman Trophy. Really, any other pick by the Bengals would be an absolute shock. So there’s one QB off the board.

The 2020 class of QBs is top-heavy with two other players being first round locks. Despite his season-ending hip injury last year, Tua Tagovailoa remains a hot subject at the top of the first round order. And as it turns out there are a few teams in need of new blood at the position. The Detroit Lions need an exit strategy for Matthew Stafford, who last season started feeling the effects of playing on a crappy team. The former No. 1 overall pick missed half the season with injury complications and is about to enter his 12th season.

The Lions have other needs and could go another direction. That doesn’t mean Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert won’t be scooped up early. Miami and the Los Angeles Chargers need help at the position and those two QBs will likely be off the board by the sixth pick. That’s barring any trades on draft day.

That means two more QBs will have to be selected the rest of the way to cash the over with a nice +448 payout. But who will be taken? There has been a lot of hype over Jordan Love recently with a number of so-called experts moving him up the board in the first round. Love is definitely a project in the mold of Josh Allen, who was drafted seventh overall in 2018.

Love has a cannon for an arm and all the physical tools, but his decision making was suspect and his numbers regressed in 2019. Two years ago he completed 64 percent of his throws for 3,567 yards and 32 touchdowns against six picks. Last season, he threw for 3,402 yards and had 20 TDs and 17 interceptions.

Love will be drafted. Scouts marvel over his build and athleticism and his ceiling is high despite the dip in the numbers. Relying on Jarret Stidahm and Brian Hoyer post Brady is riskly for the Patriots, and a guy like Love can learn from the best.

After Love it’s hard to find another quarterback worthy of being drafted in the first round. Besides, there are still a few notable free agents like Cam Newton, Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton and Joe Flacco available for teams that feel they can win now and don’t want to wait on developing a rookie. That throws a wrench in the play.

The next round of available quarterbacks includes Jalen Hurts, Jacob Eason, Jake Fromm and Anthony Gordon. Those players are viewed as second-rounders or later. That leaves a maximum of four QBs taken in the first. There’s a steep cost on the under, but it beats the alternative.
