If anything the New England Patriots are going to have a different looks in 2020. The dominant team in the AFC East and the NFL over the last two decades, the Pats forge ahead without the man most feel got them there. Tom Brady packed his Speedo for the sun of Florida leaving the team vulnerable for the first time since he took over as the starter. The Pats won at least 10 games in each of the last 17 seasons and claimed the division title in 11 consecutive years. While those streaks are in jeopardy, don’t count the Pats out just yet. They landed former MVP Cam Newton to compete for the starting job and Bill Belichick still runs the same system. Oddsmakers favor the Pats going over their projected nine wins, though that’s a low number by their standards.

2020 New England Patriots Offense Preview

One of the biggest storylines of the new NFL season is how the Patriots roll without Brady. Was Tom Terrific a product of the system or did he invent the system? Belichick and coordinator Josh McDaniels were planning on moving ahead with Jarret Stidham as their starter. A risky endeavor considering he saw little action in three games last season. When the opportunity to sign Newton to an incentive-laden deal arose, the Pats took a chance.

Newton wasn’t guaranteed the starting job when he signed. He will have to beat out Stidham, but that shouldn’t be an issue as long as Cam stays healthy. Newton played just two games last season and has dealt with injuries for the better part of two years. Early in the 2018 season Newton displayed his ball-control ability, something the Pats’ offense did well under Brady.

We could see a more wide-open attack with Newton behind center. He’s more agile than Brady, isn’t afraid to run and has a stronger arm. It’s hard to overlook the results, though. The Pats ranked among the top seven in scoring over the previous 11 seasons. N’Keal Harry and Mohamed Sanu can stretch the field with dependable pass-catchers Julian Edelman and James White being security blankets. There are plenty of options and no staff does a better job of putting players in a position to be successful.

2020 New England Patriots Defense Preview

It was almost like the Pats were getting ready for the departure of Brady. The offense made up for a lot of mistakes in previous seasons, but the Pats were solid all-around last year boasting the No. 1 ranked total and scoring unit in the NFL. Allowing only 14.1 points per game last season, the group got an infusion of youth and speed in the draft

The front had significant turnover with Kyle Van Noy and Danny Shelton departing. As always, though, the Pats have players waiting in the wings for their chance. Second-round pick Josh Uche and third-rounder Anfernee Jennings are skilled to contribute immediately. Deatrich Wise Jr., Chase Winovich and John Simon are all more than able to continue their destructive ways.

The secondary is led by Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore, who had NFL-highs of six interceptions and 20 passes defended. J.C. Jackson and Jason McCourty are capable corners with Devin McCourty one of the best safeties. Patrick Chung is one of several Pats opting out of the season leaving top-pick Kyle Dugger in position to move up the depth chart.

2020 New England Patriots Schedule Analysis

The good news is that the Pats have owned the AFC East, and while the margin is shrinking it’s still theirs until it isn’t. The Bills, Jets and Dolphins are improving, but there is the mental aspect of overtaking the Pats. That’s much easier said than done. The first two road games of the campaign take place in the most raucous buildings in the NFL. The spectator-less venues will likely benefit the Pats in their Week 2 matchup with Seattle and Week 4 encounter with the defending champion Chiefs.

A loss to Miami in last season’s finale denied the Pats a first-round playoff bye. We know how that turned out. Revenge is on the plate when the Fins visit for the opener. After their Week 6 bye, the Pats host San Francisco, visit Buffalo and the Jets then entertain Baltimore in Week 10. Continuing their dominance against their closest rivals will be crucial for another double-digit win season closing against Miami, Buffalo and the Jets in that order with the final two at home.

A tough schedule along with the loss of several key players due to COVID concerns has me wondering if the Pats can continue their streak of 10-plus win seasons. Buffalo is the biggest threat in the division with Miami and New York improving. Both Super Bowl participants and the 14-win Ravens on the docket make a brutal schedule. Nine wins is about the ceiling, but betting the over gives you a cushion on a whole number just in case Newton finds his MVP form.
