Nearly the entire group of starters returns as the Kansas City Chiefs go for a repeat of their Super Bowl title in 2020. The biggest name of them all is Patrick Mahomes, who inked a mega-deal during the offseason to stay in KC. And as long as he’s around you expect the Chiefs to be in contention. All Mahomes did was win league MVP his rookie season and the Super Bowl the following year. The Chiefs went 12-4 in each of their two seasons with Mahomes at the helm and averaged over 10 wins a season in the previous six campaigns under Andy Reid, so it isn’t all about the quarterback. Oddsmakers set the Chiefs 2020 win total at 11.5, tied with Baltimore for the highest on the board. A Super Bowl hangover is probably all that prevents the Chiefs from going over the total.

2020 Kansas City Chiefs Offense Preview

It would have been impossible for Mahomes to sustain the numbers he produced in 2018. And sure enough he didn’t. There were reasons for the decline, mainly injuries. Mahomes missed two games and most of another after sustaining an injury that many thought was season-ending. He returned a few weeks later showing the entire league he’s not only the best quarterback in the NFL he’s also a tough SOB. He finished the regular season throwing for 4,031 yards with 26 touchdowns and only five interceptions.

Give credit to Reid and coordinator Eric Bieniemy for constructing an offense around the skill set of their quarterback, and they added a piece that could potentially make the unit even scarier. The Chiefs didn’t have a ground game, but that isn’t their style. Damien Williams, who led the team with 498 rushing yards a season ago, opted out due to COVID leaving Clyde Edwards-Helaire as the top option. And he’s a perfect fit for the scheme.

Tyreek Hill is the ultimate deep threat with his ridiculous speed. Sammy Watkins knows a good thing, restructuring his contract to stick around. And Travis Kelce is the only tight end in NFL history with four straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons. If there are concerns with the offense it’s up front. Two linemen opted out, but free agents Kelechi Osemele and Mike Remmers ventured over. We should also see Martinas Rankin join the mix after he was lost early last season.

2020 Kansas City Chiefs Defense Preview

With all the attention on Mahomes and the offense you’d expect this group to get overshadowed. It took a while for them to get adjusted to new coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s scheme, but when they did it was a thing of beauty. They gave up a lot of yards, nearly 350 per game to be exact, but the group stiffened at the right time to limit opponents to fewer than 20 points per contest.

There is some uncertainty with the unit, but not up front. Chris Jones is one of the most dominant players at his position and Frank Clark was everything the team expected when trading for him. The two combined for 17 of the team’s 45 sacks in 2019. Getting after the quarterback is a must with linebackers and corners that don’t cover very well.

Tyrann Matthieu is the leader in the secondary and teams with Juan Thornhill to form a top safety duo. Kendall Fuller bolted in free agency and Bashaud Breeland could be suspended by the league following an off-season incident. The Chiefs need help at the corners with several young prospects waiting for a chance. The offense can outscore most opponents, but there isn’t much wiggle room when 12 victories are needed to win this wager.

2020 Kansas City Chiefs Schedule Analysis

A large part of the Chiefs’ success during their run of four straight AFC West titles was their dominance within the division. Since 2015 they are 27-3 against division foes and keeping that up will go a long way toward exceeding their win total. The Chargers, Broncos and Raiders have all upgraded their offenses in order to keep pace. KC’s questionable defense will be severely tested. On top of that there are road games with Baltimore, Buffalo, Tampa Bay and New Orleans.

The home portion of the slate looks mild in comparison. Maintaining that advantage will be tough if no spectators are in the building, but that shouldn’t take away from the job at hand. The Chiefs finish the season at Arrowhead against Atlanta and the Chargers, teams not accustomed to the Midwest winter cold. Winning 12 games is a possibility, but a lot has to fall in place for the Chiefs to reach that number for a third straight season.

It’s hard not to like the Chiefs, who have been the preeminent franchise the last few years. All they do is win games. Mahomes is a stud and offensively they’ll tear opponents apart. They do have a target squarely on their back and the AFC West is going to be much more competitive
