NFL Betting – Kansas City Chiefs 2021 Season Win Total

Since the arrival of Andy Reid all the Kansas City Chiefs have done is win football games. They did it more times than any other team last regular season with 14 victories setting a franchise record and they’ve averaged nearly 12 wins a season since Reid became head coach ahead of the 2013 campaign. KC achieved part of its goal last year getting back to the Super Bowl only to be handed a crushing setback. Is that 31-9 loss a motivating factor for the Chiefs to continue their run of dominance or is it the start of a decline? The former looks like the correct answer as long as Patrick Mahomes stays healthy. Oddsmakers are also in agreement putting KC’s win total at 12.5, the highest on the NFL futures board.

2021 Kansas City Chiefs Offense Preview

With their skill players in place the Chiefs needed to shore up an offensive line that was horrible in the Super Bowl loss. Granted, there were some circumstances beyond their control. A few COVID opt outs left the group thin and injuries forced a shuffle up front. They looked out of sync against the Bucs, just magnifying the problem. And winning a number of close games covered up the real issue. The additions of Orlando Brown and Joe Thuney will be huge in protecting the Franchise.

In his three years as a starter Mahomes has been brilliant with the Chiefs winning at least 12 games every year with two Super Bowls and an AFC Championship Game appearance. With Mahomes throwing for 4,740 yards and 38 touchdowns last season the Chiefs had the top ranked passing attack while amassing the most total yards per game. Unless opposing defenses have a few extra players on the field the numbers aren’t going to deviate.

The addition last season of Clyde Edwards-Helaire added some pop to the run game making the attack more diverse. But make no mistake the Chiefs bread and butter is through the air. Tyreek Hill is the ultimate deep threat and they will have to replace Sammy Watkins, who signed elsewhere. It’ll be up to inexperienced receivers Mecole Hardman, DeMarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle to keep the unit clicking. The line is better, which is a plus, but the receiving corps is suspect without Watkins. Travis Kelce remains one of the best tight ends in the game and I don’t anticipate a drop off in production with Mahomes at the helm.

2021 Kansas City Chiefs Defense Preview

We’re likely to see more of the same from the defense this season. The bend but don’t break group was middle-of-the-pack in total yards allowed but ranked among the top-10 in points surrendered per game. With an offense that can score points in a hurry there is a large margin for error and the team took advantage. There is some concern with Frank Clark facing a suspension to start the year.

The team will rely on the play of Chris Jones up front and Tyronn Matthieu in the secondary. The two were important pieces during the Super Bowl season of 2019 and played large last year. Jones had a team-best 7.5 sacks from his interior line spot and Matthieu led the club with six picks while posting 62 tackles.

One thing the Chiefs have done under Reid is find complementary players. they will need to come up with a few gems on defense to bolster the play of their top guys. The hope is that recent draft picks Willie Gay and Nick Bolton can infuse some talent and toughness to a group of linebackers that have been capable but not spectacular of the past few seasons.

2021 Kansas City Chiefs Schedule Analysis

A large part of the Chiefs’ success during their run of five straight AFC West titles was their dominance within the division. Since 2015 they are 32-4 against division foes and keeping that up will go a long way toward exceeding their win total. It could be much tougher this year, though. The Raiders handed KC one of its two losses and LA’s Justin Hebert took the Chiefs to overtime in his first start last year. And every team in the division is trending in the right direction.

In comparison to last season the 2021 schedule looks favorable. The expected tough games are at home with Cleveland, Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Green Bay(?) all visiting Arrowhead. And they also get an additional home game with the expanded schedule. Road games with Baltimore and Tennessee are the only ones against teams with a winning record last season.

Teams that win 14 games typically regress the following year and I can see that with the Chiefs. Oh, they should still be good and will likely win the division again, but they went 8-0 in one-possession games and weren’t the dominant force they had been. It’s unrealistic to expect that kind of success again.
