Odds Analysis

Coming off their first loss of the season the Niners looked sloppy last week against the Cardinals, but escaped with a win by scoring twice in the final minute. The home team opened as a 4-point favorite with the line wagered down by strong public support for the Packers. Green Bay took down Carolina in its last outing with a 24-16 cover before its bye. The Pack is 7-3 ATS this season and 2-0 SU and ATS when playing as a road dog. The Niners possess the No. 2 defense in the NFL but they’ve allowed more than 10 points over their season average in the last three games forcing a spike in the total to 48.

What does a healthy Aaron Rodgers mean to the Packers? Well, just take a look at their record and performance and you’ll have everything you need to know. Beset with injuries the last two seasons, Rodgers is playing at the MVP level that fans have become accustomed to. And Rodgers knows that at some point this season he’ll have to win on the Niners home field.

It was a clear response to playoff positioning when Rodgers said, “The way I look at it we’ve got to beat them once at their place at some point. It would be nice to do it now.” With both teams at the top of the NFC standings the outcome of this one will decide home field in a tie-break scenario. According to ESPN’s FPI, Sunday night’s winner will have a better than 40 percent chance to be the top-seed in the conference.

Coming off a bye hasn’t been the most fruitful for Green Bay recently. The Pack lost to the Rams last year following an off week and they are just 1-3 SU and 1-2-1 ATS in their last four such games. But this is a different club, mainly because of Rodgers. Of any quarterback to throw more than 200 passes, Rodgers is tied for the fewest interceptions with two, and the Packers have turned the ball over just seven times and rank No. 2 in turnover margin at +9.

If you had doubts about the Niners we’ll find out more in the next few weeks. Sunday night’s game is the start of a three-game swing that includes road matches at Baltimore and New Orleans after this. All three teams enter Week 12 with an 8-2 record. And it’s not a good time for the defense to come off the hinges.

I guess some regression was expected since the group was so good through the first seven games. Over the last three contests the numbers across the board have climbed significantly. The Niners allowed an average of 319 yards and 26 points per game over that stretch and were lucky to twice knock off the last-place Cardinals. The Niners still own the second-best defense allowing just 253 yards per game and 15.5 points. Stopping the run has been the weakness with 110.5 yards allowed per game.

Jimmy Garoppolo looked lost without George Kittle in the Niners’ loss to Seattle a few weeks ago. Kittle missed last week’s game and his status heading into Sunday is unknown. Leading rusher Matt Breida missed a few games and is questionable. Could this be the result of having a bye in Week 4?

I’m one who still doesn’t trust the Niners. It’s amazing what they’ve done after years of futility, but they get a quality opponent which is healthy and rested. And I think the Packers are going to learn from their last visit to the West Coast. A few weeks back they were stifled by the Chargers, their only loss in the last six games. Coming off a bye against a battered Niners club is enough for me to back Green Bay.

NFL Score Prediction: Green Bay 26, San Francisco 21
