Poor Jason Garrett. The former Dallas Cowboys coach got no credit when the team won and took all the blame when they lost. The problem was he just didn’t win enough with all the resources at his disposal. Finishing a disappointing 8-8 last season was the last straw. Jerry Jones finally pulled the plug on Garrett overhauling the coaching staff with Mike McCarthy taking over. There certainly is talent on the roster, especially on offense, and McCarthy did more with less during his time in Green Bay. Is he the right man to turn the Boys into a contender this year? The owner/GM thinks so.

2020 Dallas Cowboys Offense Preview

There is a lot of money invested on this side of the football and it’s up to McCarthy to get the most out of the group. Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott and Amari Cooper have been compared to the big three of the 90s when Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin were winning championships. However, until the current group enjoys postseason success there really are no similarities.

Prescott showed he can throw the ball last season logging a career-best 4,902 yards through the air. That was over 1,000 yards more than his previous season-high. He also tossed a career-best 30 touchdowns with only 11 interceptions leading the second-best aerial attack in the NFL. The offense was well balanced averaging over 134 yards on the ground to lead the league with 431.5 yards per game. The Boys scored an average of 27.1 points to rank sixth.

Elliott ran for 1,357 yards but had just four rushes over 20 yards with a long of 33. The hope is that Zeke gets his explosiveness back with fewer attempts now that Tony Pollard is a proven option. Cooper and Michael Gallup each had over 1,000 receiving yards in 2019 and with CeeDee Lamb added to the group we could see more in the passing attack. McCarthy is salivating over what the group can do.

2020 Dallas Cowboys Defense Preview

It was mind-boggling that the Boys won only eight games last year considering the prolific offense and decent defense. They ranked ninth allowing 327 yards and their 20.1 points per game surrendered put them 11th. One area that held them back was turnovers. Dallas had only 17 takeaways, which was more than just five teams, and they were minus-1 in turnover differential.

The overhaul of the group starts at the top with Mike Nolan brought in as the new coordinator. A veteran of the coaching ranks, one thing he’s done during his career is produce teams that can create turnovers. He also has some pieces to work with. After recording 25 sacks combined in the previous two seasons, DeMarcus Lawrence had only five in 2019. That number needs to be much higher now that Robert Quinn is no longer around.

A boost for the group would be the return of Aldon Smith and Randy Gregory, players who can get after the quarterback and fit Nolan’s scheme. When healthy, linebackers Leighton Vander Esch, Sean Lee and Jaylon Smith are among the best in the game. The secondary has a new look with Ha Ha Clinton Dix taking a safety spot and rookie Trevon Diggs slotted at a corner position. There is more depth, something the Boys lacked in recent years.

2020 Dallas Cowboys Schedule Analysis

Playing in the NFC East where the Eagles look to be the only competition, the Cowboys have a good shot at exceeding their win total. We don’t know what teams are going to look like in 2020, things change every year. And this year has the added predicament of dealing with COVID and no preseason. That could play a pivotal role for a team with a rebuilt coaching staff. Of the first nine opponents only two reached the postseason last year, so there is a chance for a quick start.

Starting in October there are three straight home games on the slate, making the first half of the season and important stretch for the Boys. And they better hope they are on the positive side heading into their Week 10 bye since Minnesota, Baltimore and San Francisco loom. Dallas also hosts the Eagles in Week 16 in what could decide the division. They close at the Giants for the second meeting against former coach Garrett, who is now the offensive coordinator in New York.

Bet Dallas Cowboys Win Total at BookMaker.eu

Everything starts at the top. Not at the top of the organization rather at the top of the coaching staff. McCarthy is a step up at that spot and the talent is certainly in place. The Boys should score points and with some help from the other side I see them not only going over their win total but also contending for a division title.

J.J. McCarthy Drafted Number 3 Odds to Patriots

To be clear, the Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy is pretty certain to land in Minnesota.  But what if the New England Patriots shock us and pick McCarthy at Number 3 before the Vikings get their opportunity at No. 5?

Bet on Jared Verse Draft Position

Jared Verse had an over/under selection number of 15.5 with CBS Sports believing the Florida State EDGE will be chosen by the Seattle Seahawks at No. 16.
