An interconference tilt between first-place teams hits the airwaves on Monday Night Football when the Cleveland Browns visit the San Francisco 49ers. Flashing the offensive potential that many felt would lift them out of the doldrums, the Browns whacked AFC North rival Baltimore, 40-25, last week to gain a share of the division lead.

The Niners have taken advantage of a soft schedule in the early part of the year to lead the NFC West with a perfect 3-0 ledger. The Niners are coming off a bye and they are 0-6 SU and ATS following in their last six following an off week. Still, the Niners are a 4-point favorite on the current NFL betting line.

Odds Analysis

The Niners opened as a 5-point home favorite, but the line dipped slightly after the Browns showed signs of life knocking off the Ravens last week. San Francisco entered its bye with a 24-20 win over Pittsburgh, however, the Niners failed to cover the 6-point spread suffering their first loss against the line this season. Since the start of the 2015 season the Niners are 3-4 SU and 0-7 ATS as a home favorite. Going back to last season the Browns are 2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS as a road dog. The total opened at 47 and was wagered down a point to its current value of 46.

You can say this about any quarterback in the NFL, but give Baker Mayfield time to throw the football and he’ll be successful. After taking 11 sacks and numerous hits in the first three games, the offensive line gave the Franchise a clean pocket last week. And Mayfield delivered with his most efficient game of the season. Mayfield’s 30 pass attempts were the fewest in four games and the 342 yards were the most. He was sacked and hit just once by Baltimore defenders.

What we saw last week was the kind of performance we expect to see every game from the Browns offense. And that makes us wonder if the problems have been fixed. The Baltimore defense isn’t the same, but the Browns amassed 530 yards behind a balanced attack. The O line was the biggest issue coming in and will be the rest of the season. We saw what the Browns are capable of when the group plays well.

The yards and points last week came without Odell Beckham being a factor. Instead, Jarvis Landry was the main target with eight catches for 167 yards. And the Nick Chubb ran for 165 yards and three touchdowns on just 20 carries. The defense did its part sacking Lamar Jackson four times and producing two takeaways.

It’s been a great start to the season for the downtrodden Niners, who are the only undefeated team in the NFC. Things will get much more difficult from here on out, though. There’s always a concern having the bye week so early in the year. That means 13 straight weeks of football, and the schedule won’t be so forgiving. This is the NFL and it’s tough to win. But when opponents are so philanthropic you have to take advantage. And the Niners have done that.

Jameis Winston practically gifted the opener with not one, but two pick-sixes. The Bengals, well, they are the Bengals and might be the worst team in the NFL. The Niners gave the ball away five times in their last game and still beat the Steelers, who were playing their first game without Ben Roethlisberger. So let’s put the brakes on San Fran’s Super Bowl plans and wait to see how they do against some tougher competition.

The defense looks a helluva a lot better, but that could be a product of the competition. The offense has been inconsistent and turnovers are an issue. Still they are the only team in the NFC without a loss. Given their recent history in games after a bye, the Niners might ask the NFL to eliminate the off week from their schedule. They’ve lost six in a row SU after a bye and they’ve dropped their last seven against the spread.

It’s good to see the Niners have success after so many horrible years. We could say the same about the Browns. Mayfield and his clan will challenge the Niners like no other team has and I anticipate they will have success. SF has been potent with the football boasting one of the top run games in the league, which should lead to points giving value to the over. I’m not convinced the Niners have completely turned the corner and I like the visitors with the points.

NFL Score Prediction: Cleveland 26, San Francisco 21
