The NFL will have one less winless team when the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers convene for the Week 4 Monday Night Football matchup. It isn’t a complete surprise that the Bengals have yet to win a game since not much was expected from them. The Steelers, on the other hand, are experiencing just their second 0-3 start since 2000 and will have to navigate the remainder of the season without Ben Roethlisberger. In Big Ben’s absence, Mason Rudolph made his first career start in a losing effort to the Niners last week. Pittsburgh has won three straight and five of the last six over the Bengals at Heinz Field and they are a 4-point favorite on the current NFL betting line.

Odds Analysis

The season-ending injury to Roethlisberger definitely impacted Pittsburgh’s futures odds and also plays with the individual game numbers. The Steelers originally opened at -8.5 when Big Ben was healthy. The number has been sliced in half. Not that the Steelers were tearing it up with Roethlisberger in the lineup; they were 0-2 SU and ATS in his two starts. The Steelers covered the 6-point spread last week in Rudolph’s first start. The Bengals rallied from a 14-0 deficit and had a late lead over the Bills before blowing it. They did, however, cover the 5.5-point line in the 21-17 setback. The losses continue to pile up but the Bengals have been a money maker. They are 1-9 SU and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 outings.

Cincinnati Bengals

For the second time in three years the Bengals have started a season 0-3. The good news is that every team in the AFC North has at least two losses already and the Bengals are a win away from getting back in the hunt. The bad news is that wins have been difficult to come by. Dating back to last season the Bengals have dropped five straight and 10 of their last 11 games. They have been a good bet, however. Over their last 10 games they are 7-3 against the spread and they are 2-0 ATS on the road this season.

Making money for their backers is nice, but Cincy sure would love to win a game. They’ve come close losing by a point in Seattle and falling 21-17 last week in Buffalo. In both those games the Bengals had a 17-14 lead in the fourth quarter only to fail. They’ve lost so much over the last few seasons that they don’t know how to win. The offense has failed to move the football consistently, which was a major reason for last week’s loss. Badly outplayed for most of the afternoon, Andy Dalton led an improbable comeback to get the lead with less than five minutes left.

A worn out Bengals defense couldn’t hold the advantage. The group was on the field for 37 minutes. That’s because the offense managed three first downs and 90 yards on its first nine possessions. Dalton picked things up late and finished 20 of 36 for 249 yards. He had the Captain Obvious statement afterwards saying, “We can’t have the performance we had in the first half and expect to win.”

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers are a team in transition and things aren’t looking very good for the longtime AFC powerhouse. Off to their first 0-3 since 2013 and just their second since 2000, they’ll have to get by without Roethlisberger and a defense that has allowed over 28 points per game and ranks 27th against the run, 30th in pass yards allowed and 29th overall. Those are pathetic numbers from a group that was supposedly the team’s strength entering the campaign.

Offensively they haven’t been much better with only 16.3 points scored per outing. There’s no relying on a ground game to take the pressure off Rudolph since the Steelers average just 64 rushing yards per game. James Connor ran for 43 yards last week, which was the highest total in a game this season.

Facing the right opponent to get well, the Steelers have won the last seven meetings and 10 of the last 11 with their division rival. The only loss in that span, however, took place at Heinz Field during the 2015 season.

Up until a few seasons ago this was a nasty rivalry defined by pure hatred between the clubs. Most of the instigators from that time are no longer around and the teams are at the other end of the standings for the first meeting of the year. The bad blood is still there, and so is Pittsburgh’s dominance. Rudolph was efficient last week and I expect the Steelers will have more success running the football against the worst run defense in the NFL.

NFL Score Prediction: Pittsburgh 23, Cincinnati 16
