A strong draft and the acquisition of one of the top receivers in the game have set the Arizona Cardinals up for success in 2020. At least the expectations have been raised in the desert. Last season was a transition year moving on from the disaster of Steve Wilks. Rookie coach Kliff Kingsbury got his feet wet as did first overall pick Kyler Murray improving the team’s win total from three in 2018 to five. Toss DeAndre Hopkins into the mix and the Cards offense should be vastly improved. There were issues on the other side of the football. Did the Cards do enough to make the jump to a .500 team?

2020 Arizona Cardinals Offense Preview

A new system, new quarterback and a terrible offensive line held the Cardinals back last year. Murray had a strong campaign, but the Cards finished 24th in passing and ranked 21st in total offense while scoring 22.6 points. Murray experienced growing pains thrust into the role in Kingsbury’s up-tempo approach. He threw for 3,722 yards with 20 touchdowns and will likely continue his development. The arrival of Hopkins should improve the aerial attack.

The Cards didn’t give up much to get a top pass-catcher. They parted with back David Johnson, who never regained his from after an early season injury in 2017. Hopkins had over 100 receptions in each of the last two seasons while totaling more than 1,150 yards in each of the last three. He also has 31 TD grabs in that span. Kenyan Drake took over for Johnson last year following his mid-season acquisition, leading the team with 643 rushing yards.

Murray spent a lot of time avoiding defenders yet he was still sacked a NFL-high 48 times. The line needed some restructuring. Marcus Gilbert returns from a knee injury to bolster the tackle spot and third-round pick Josh Jones will fight for playing time. Overall the group looks improved from last season.

2020 Arizona Cardinals Defense Preview

This is where the turnaround needs to happen for the Cardinals to push for a winning season. The unit ranked at or near the bottom of every major statistical category last season. The Cards allowed 402 total yards (32nd), including 282 yards per game (31st) through the air. There were offseason moves made to upgrade the defense giving some optimism things will be different.

Two important pieces are already in place. Cornerback Patrick Peterson remains one of the best in the game despite declining results. He should thrive, though, with a better cast around him. And Chandler Jones is a disruptive edge rusher. In four years with the Cards he’s compiled 60 sacks, leading the league in 2017 and posting a career-high 19 last season to finish second. He also led the NFL with eight forced fumbles in 2019.

Joining the fray is top pick Isaiah Simmons, who can play anywhere on the field. The Cards want him to focus on one position so he’ll likely be a linebacker. Jordan Phillips had 9.5 sacks with Buffalo last year and is a big addition on the line. Devon Kennard and De’Vondre Campbell came over in free agency giving the team options in the front seven.

2020 Arizona Cardinals Schedule Analysis

The NFC West is shaping up as one of if not the most competitive division. The 49ers look poised for another good season, Seattle is always tough and the Rams have beaten the Cards the last six meetings. To get to .500 the Cards will have to make some noise against their foes. We’ll get an idea of how far they’ve come with the opener in Santa Clara against the NFC champions. The Cards played SF tough last year losing both games by a combined 13 points. They had a late lead on the road only to give up a touchdown followed by a SF defensive score. Good teams find a way to close out those games.

The next four games are pivotal. The Cards host Washington and Detroit followed by road trips to Carolina and the Jets. Winning three of those matchups is a must in order to reach the 8-win mark. Sneaking in a few more wins against the division would help. Their only NFC West victory last year was at Seattle. The Rams look like a team in transition and could be ripe. The Cards haven’t beaten LA since the final game of the 2016 season.

The Cards haven’t had a winning season since reaching the NFC title game in 2015, but it looks like they are on the right path. They have improved, at least on paper, on both sided of the football and they were competitive in most of their games last season. I’m leaning toward the over because of that and also like that if they win seven games the bet is a push.
