NBA Board of Governors Approves Restart, MLB Season Looking Less Likely

The NBA's board of governors intends to approve a league proposal on a 22-team format to restart the season in Orlando, Florida, sources told ESPN.  The season came to an abrupt halt March 11 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The conference call and vote is set for 12:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, sources said.

The plan includes 13 Western Conference teams and nine Eastern Conference teams, eight regular-season games, a possible play-in tournament for the eighth seed, and playoffs, sources told ESPN.

The play-in tournament will include the No. 8 and No. 9 teams -- if the ninth seed finishes the regular season within four games of the eighth, sources said.

A finish date is slated as October 12 though the exact starting date was not immediately known other than the league anticipates playing by or prior to July 31.

Meanwhile, Major League Baseball has rejected a plan presented by the Players Association that would have a 114-game season with prorated salaries.  The league has no plan for a counter-offer.

The commissioner’s office has begun speaking with owners about implementing a shortened season.

From MLB Trade Rumors:

Owners contend that ommissioner Rob Manfred can seek to unilaterally impose a shortened season if the union won’t budge from its prorated salary demands, and it appears that’s where they’re leaning, per the New York Post’s Joel Sherman. Either a 48- to 54-game season with fully prorated salaries or an 82-game season at less than prorated salaries are under consideration.

The odds of the MLB season getting underway initially opened with "YES" as a -500 or 1/5 favorite, but betting action, possibly based on the news that owners are willing to cancel the season, has moved the odds.

Will there be an MLB regular season?
Yes -300
No +200
(Yes odds imply there is a 75% chance of season happening, down from 83.3% when odds were -500)
