McKinzie was the early favorite to win the 2018 Kentucky Derby but was diagnosed with a bruised hock after the San Felipe on March 10 and missed all three races in the Triple Crown series as he recovered.

“I always felt at the beginning of the year that was going to be my Derby horse,” trainer Bob Baffert said. “He got hurt, and fortunately I had that little red horse come along, Justify, that picked up the slack.”

McKinzie is one of three Classic hopefuls for Baffert, who also has 4-year-old West Coast (5-1 odds) and 5-year-old Collected (30-1).
