Rumors began swirling throughout the day Thursday of the potential shutdown.  MPN confirmed it Friday morning.

In a statement posted on Microgaming’s website, Microgaming CEO John Coleman offered a brief explanation:

"The network model no longer fits with our strategic vision for poker, and this is the right time to announce the closure as we focus on redistributing key resources and personnel across the business. While the network will be closing, this is not the end for poker at Microgaming, which is driven to create the most enjoyable entertainment experiences, leading the way with world-class gaming content. Ultimately, this move will help the business to achieve that vision as we follow a new strategic direction for the vertical, details of which will be revealed in due course."

The network will remain open for the next 6 to 9 months.

The effect on affiliates was not immediately known though some were making preparations to have their players start to cash out.

Skins currently operating on the network will need to seek out a new home.

Microgaming is among the industry's oldest online gambling software providers having launched its first online casino in 1994.  The poker network has existed since the early 2000's.
