The New York Yankees opened the second half of the season making a push to move up the AL East standings. They beat the Boston Red Sox twice last weekend, their first wins over their arch-rival this season. The clubs go at it again with Saturday’s tilt the third of a four-game set. Entering the series seven games back in the standings the head-to-head matchups are important for the Bombers to climb out of the hole they put themselves in with a lackluster first half.

The AL East battle will air live on FS1 at 4:05 p.m. ET from Fenway Park. Betting options for every game on the 2021 MLB schedule are available at BookMaker.eu.

Odds Analysis

The Yankees showed some fight winning four in a row ahead of this series. That included a pair of wins over the Red Sox last weekend in the Bronx breaking a seven-game overall losing streak to their rivals. Starting pitching has been a big reason for the surge with Gerrit Cole and Saturday’s starter Jameson Taillon turning in gems along the way. As long as they stay away from the bullpen the Yankees have a good chance. Keeping struggling closer Aroldis Chapman out of high-leverage situations allows for others to step up. Unfortunately no one has.

The Yankees have the second highest bullpen ERA in the majors when leading in the ninth inning or later. Chad Green blew a two-run ninth inning lead and Brooks Kriske coughed up a pair of runs in the 10th after New York retook the lead in the top of the frame. Kriske tossed four wild pitches in the frame and the Yanks lost Thursday’s series opener 5-4.

While it was a debilitating loss for the Yankees, the Sox have apparently snapped out of their recent funk. Losing two straight in New York last weekend dropped the Sox to 2-6 in an eight game run. They bounced back by stomping the Jays in a pair of games and twice came back to win the opener on Thursday. The Sox boast one of the top offenses in MLB and they’ve been showing off by scoring 35 runs in their three-game winning streak.

Probable Pitchers

A strong July has not only given Jameson Taillon (5-4, 4.60 ERA) hope of turning his season around, it also sparked thoughts of a comeback for the Yankees. In three starts this month, Taillon has pitched to a 1.47 ERA while going 2-0. He should’ve had a third win if not for a bullpen implosion in an 8-7 loss to Houston before the All-Star break. The Yanks held a 7-2 lead in that one but surrendered six runs in the bottom of the ninth. He was sharp against Boston last time out giving up four hits across 5.1 shutout innings for his first career win over the Sox.

The month started with his best performance of the season. Against Seattle on July 6, Taillon allowed four hits and one run over a season-high 7.0 innings while fanning nine. The Yankees are 4-1 in his last five starts scoring 47 runs total in those games. Over the last three outings he lowered his ERA by nearly a full run.

Nathan Eovaldi (9-5, 3.57 ERA) will make his fourth start against the Yankees looking to continue his season-long run of success. He’s allowed just one earned run in each of the three previous outings and is coming off a ND last weekend when he completed five frames with seven strikeouts in a game the Sox lost 3-1.

Three times over his last six starts Eovaldi has pitched into the seventh inning. Over that span he’s produced a 2.50 ERA and has allowed only two home runs over 36.0 innings. He’s yielded just five big flies in 108.1 innings this season. Eovaldi hasn’t been bothered by the Yankees offense this season. In three starts he’s 2-0 with a 1.45 ERA walking just one hitter with 20 punchouts over his 18.2 innings of work.

Bet Yankees at Red Sox at BookMaker.eu

It’s hard to trust the Yankees considering the issues they have in the bullpen. And unless Taillon goes the distance or the offense breaks out they could have a hard time winning in Boston. It’s been difficult for them anyway having dropped the first four games in Fenway, and the way Eovaldi has thrown against them I have to back the home team.

MLB Score Prediction: Red Sox 5, Yankees 3
