Kentucky Derby 2019 Expert Picks, Post Position Draw

Tuesday's post position draw will most certainly alter the odds and will help the expert handicappers make their picks for the 2019 Kentucky Derby.

Omaha Beach is an unconvincing favorite to win the 2019 Kentucky Derby, and with good reason.

Doc's Sports expert handicapper Robert Ferringo points out that only three horses have won from Omaha Beach's post position of 12. It gets worse.  The last champion from this post position was crowned way back in 1971.

The good news for Omaha Beach is that the favorite has won the last five Kentucky Derby races.

The two other most highly-regarded horses in this year's field, Game Winner (5-to-1) and Roadster (6-to-1), drew wide posts. Game Winner is in post No. 16, while Roadster will start next to him at No. 17.  Both these horses are trained by Bob Baffert as he attempts to tie the record with his sixth career Derby winner.

From Doc's Sports:

Only 10 horses in the 144-year history of the Kentucky Derby have won the race starting wider than No. 15. Only five horses have claimed the title starting at No. 17 or wider.

However, four of the last eight winners have started from post No. 16 or wider.

So which horses had the lucky draws?

The No. 4, No. 8 and No. 10 posts have each produced 10 winners. Gray Magicians (50-to-1), Tacitus (10-to-1) and Cutting Humor (30-to-1) drew those slots, respectively.
