After Much Effort PokerStars Gives Up on California

Jeff Grubbe, chairman of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, did not want online poker companies like PokerStars to enter the California market, citing former improprieties.  PokerStars had joined forces with the Morongo Band of Mission Indians.  This resulted in a pretty signficant conflict of interest.

Robert Martin, chairman of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, made it clear at the time the exclusion of PokerStars “would be a deal breaker”.

The two online poker bills in play were Assembly Bill 2291 by Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer, D-Los Angeles, and Senate Bill 1366 by state Sen. Lou Correa, D-Santa Ana.

Lawmakers and lobbying groups had been trying to legalize online poker in the state for nearly a decade.
