Illinois Sports Betting Kicks Off Today

The Rivers Casino in Des Plaines has received initial approval to offer sports betting in the state of Illinois starting today March 9, 2020 just in time for March Madness.  The Tournament tips off March 17.

The sportsbook expects to take its first bet at Noon.

“The BetRivers Sportsbook will take March Madness out of the office pool and into an exciting, elevated live sports wagering experience,” Corey Wise, general manager of Rivers Casino, said in a news release Friday.

So far six casinos have applied for sports betting licenses.

Penn National Gaming, which operates the Hollywood Casinos in Joliet and Aurora and Argosy Casino Alton near St. Louis, will offer information on their sports book rollouts in the “coming days,” company spokesman Jeff Morris said Friday.

Two of the biggest sports betting firms have been shut out of the Illinois market for the first two years: Draftkings and FanDuel.

While mobile sports wagering will soon be available, customers must register in-person at a designated casino venue for the first two years.

Betting on in-state schools and games that feature them will be strictly prohibited.  This includes the Fighting Illini, who are expected to take part in this year's Tournament.
