How to Bet on Sports Online in California

You can bet on sports using your mobile device or laptop computer with any number of top websites, many of which have been in business now for more than 20 years.  BetOnline is one such site.  They have been in operation since 1999 and offer very generous welcome bonuses (max bonus $1000).

Does California Regulate or License Sports Betting Sites?

California does not regulate or license sportsbooks.  Those sites accessible for betting in California are mostly licensed in other jurisdictions.  For example, Jazz has a strong presence throughout Latin America where it is based.  They are licensed in Costa Rica and also have land-based casinos that are regulated in countries such as Mexico.

Due to the lack of regulation, these websites are not permitted to use apps.  Instead they will be browser-based only.  Some credit card-issuing banks may reject attempts to set up betting accounts online, however, there are plenty of other options available.  Bitcoin deposits and withdrawals are fast becoming the norm due to the ease of initiating transactions, speed of payouts and the anonymity factor.

Jazz Sports also welcomes those 18 and up compared to nearly all gambling venues in the US, which require individuals to be at least 21.

Future Outlook

The Tribes control much of the gambling in California.  Without their input in legislative efforts, there will be no in-state regulation any time soon.

Even with the willingness to work with the Tribes, there are often conflicts among them.  That was the issue over a near decades long effort to legalize online poker.

Even if the Tribes were to somehow get on board, they have already expressed a desire to prohibit mobile/remote sports betting in order to ensure foot traffic (and revenues) on their casino properties.
