The Triple Crown is off the table and the four horses that paced the field at the Kentucky Derby are all absent. That just adds more intrigue to the 144th running of the Preakness Stakes. Bob Baffert didn’t get a win at Churchill Downs a few weeks ago despite having three cracks at it.

The legendary trainer will aim for a record eighth victory at the Preakness with Improbable, who is the betting favorite at BookMaker.eu and appears to be the class of the field that has a number of relative unknowns. Improbable is one of four horses that ran in the Derby and, along with War Of Will, is the most experienced in graded stakes races.

Location: Pimlico Race Course, Baltimore, MD

Being the favorite doesn’t make Improbable the best horse in the race. And it certainly doesn’t guarantee a victory. The colt closed as the favorite two weeks ago and never threatened, getting treated to fourth place finish with the help of Maximum Security’s DQ. Country House was given the garland of roses and made backers extremely happy with a hefty payout at 65/1. We didn’t see that coming, but if any race has the potential for an upset winner this is it.

Improbable is the favorite for a reason. He had never finished lower than second in any of his races prior to the Kentucky Derby and he didn’t take to the sloppy track at Churchill Downs. Though he hasn’t won as a 3-year-old, he’s run well. His triumph at the G1 Los Alamitos Futurity as a 2-year-old was a highlight.

Baffert sees an opportunity to claim his record breaking eighth Preakness win and he’s going for it. “With Maximum Security not in there, that’s why we’re running,” he said. It’s a smaller and less competitive field than at the Derby and Improbable will also have a new rider. Hall of Famer Mike Smith is in the saddle, teaming up with Baffert again after riding Justify to the Triple Crown last year.

A number of horses are making a jump in the level of competition leaving plenty of uncertainty around them. But like we saw at the Derby, anything can happen.

One horse to keep an eye on is Alwaysmining, who enters the Preakness on a six-race winning streak. The Maryland-bred colt owned Laurel Park and wowed the crowd with an impressive 11½ length victory in the Federico Tesio Stakes in April, earning him a step up in competition.

Anothertwistafate had plenty of success against lesser competition finishing first or second in five of his six career starts. He earned his invite to the Preakness with a dominant seven-length victory in the “Win and You’re In” El Camino Real Derby in February.

War Of Will also ran in the Kentucky Derby and we’ll never know how he would have finished since he was at the center of the obstruction controversy with Maximum Security. He finished seventh at Churchill Downs in what his handlers called a respectable showing, but the results haven’t been good in his last two starts. He is the most experienced horse in the field with the Derby being his third G1 stakes ride.

With so much fresh blood running it’s hard to actually consider one of them a top contender. Improbable has too much going for him to be overlooked. Hall of Fame trainer and jockey, solid blood lines and an impressive racing resume. Baffert even said that Improbable is running because several other big names aren’t, and that’s a sign right there. There’s always the chance for an upset, but Improbable is the class of the field and he has a favorable post position, which will allow him to set the pace.

Preakness Stakes Prediction: 1) Improbable 2) Alwaysmining 3) Owendale
