It's hard enough to win with your Super Bowl prop bets backing a safety to occur.  It's even harder to win with a safety being the first score of the game.  The payout is a cool $3750 on a $100 bet.  Typically a safety being scored at any time during the Super Bowl pays around $800 to $900 on a $100 bet.

Oh but the stars did align in Super Bowl 48, not too long ago.

Running back Knowshon Moreno recovered the ball and smartly took a knee, putting Seattle up, 2-0, in what was the fastest scoring play in Super Bowl history. That play might have appeared to have killed the books with the safety being the first score paying 60-1 odds.

The reality is that few people were brave enough to bet that prop.  Those that did weren't likely to lay more than $100.  And, because this is typically one of the most popular prop bet with more than 95% of the action on either a touchdown or field goal being scored first, the books still made out like bandits.

To this date, a safety has been scored in the Super Bowl nine times, or one every 5.89 Super Bowls.
