It was all about Essential Quality and Hot Rod Charlie in the end with all other horses far back but favorite Essential Quality pulled off the win with Hot Rod Charlie leading much of the way.
Essential Quality paid 2-1 odds.
Rombaurer finished a distant third. He was the Preakness Stakes champion.
Hot Rod Charlie had gotten heavy morning action at the books.
This was trainer Brad Cox first Triple Crown win.
Essential Quality had finished 2nd in the Kentucky Derby to Medina Spirit. It could be determined that Medina Spirit gets disqualified due to a failed drug test. This would ultimately result in Cox having two Triple Crown victories.
