This past week Draftkings announced its intent to merge with Diamond Eagle Acquisition Corp., a blank-check company that is already publicly traded, and gaming technology firm SBTech. Such a merger could help get Draftkings in Illinois much sooner provided regulators don't get too overbearing. It appears SBTech can enter the Illinois market early.
This traffic period was from Saturday evening. The brunt of searches coming in from Chicago to the Gambling911 website pertained to Draftkings ("Can I Bet on Draftkings Sportsbook App From Illinois"). Sunday morning (December 29) witnessed especially heavy volume coming in from the region, most inquiries tied to Draftkings.
The Draftkings brand is already well recognized in the state as a result of its Daily Fantasy Sports product and gorilla advertising campaign.
The company has threatened to go nuclear following the denial, which is believed to be an effort to get the Rivers Casino an early foothold. Draftkings has run advocacy ads in response.
"Advocacy advertisements will air on radio broadcast and cable, state- and city-wide, including morning and evening news, late-night talk shows and live sporting events," Draftkings announced over the summer. "There will also be a multichannel digital engagement campaign across social media, search, YouTube and over-the-top streaming providers, including Hulu, Roku and radio providers like Spotify and Pandora.”
