The i-Gaming haven of Malta is seeing the third highest number of Covid-19 cases per capita in the European Union, according to data gathered and published by the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC).

Data released the end of last week showed that Malta had registered 720.42 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants over the previous two weeks.

Only Czechia – with a staggering 1,572.02 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the previous two weeks – and Estonia – with 1,397.09 cases per 100,000 inhabitants – ranked higher.

The high spreading UK variant is said to be the primary strain in Malta.

New measures imposing the closure of schools, non-essential shops and services, gyms, and sports amongst other things were implemented last week as a result of the spike.

Over 120,000 doses of the vaccine had been administered as of Saturday, with almost 40,000 people having received both doses of the vaccine.

Malta is expected to achieve herd immunity by Mid-July.
