For the first time since “The Drive” and “The Fumble” the Cleveland Browns are relevant. Of course the Browns lost those games, but they were both in the AFC Championship, which is the closest the team has ever come to reaching the Super Bowl.

There have been lean times since those days, but Baker Mayfield and Co. are ready to put those in the rearview. The hype for the 2019 Browns is real. Cleveland is the betting favorite to win the AFC North with a win total of nine. Oddsmakers are believers, now can the team deliver?

Pittsburgh and Baltimore both lost more than they gained during the offseason. And the Bengals have pretty much the same team that won six games last year, so the AFC North is ripe for the pickin. Even with all the hype we have to remember the Browns finished last season with a losing record at 7-8-1. Also remember this is a club that didn’t win a game two seasons ago and improved to reward over bettors in 2018. To do it again they need just three more victories, and that should be easy after jumping seven wins last year.

Schedule Analysis

Four primetime games tell us the networks are buying into the Browns. They get the AFC East and NFC West, meaning games against the defending conference champions are on the slate. The Rams visit in Week 3 while the Browns head to New England in Week 8 right after their bye. Two Monday night games in the first month leave a short week to prepare for the Rams and Seahawks. But overall this appears to be a favorable set up, especially the back half with matchups against Cincinnati twice, Arizona and Miami in the final six weeks.

Tennessee, the Jets, Buffalo and Denver are all teams that could challenge for a playoff spot, but are more likely on the outside looking in. These are winnable games for a team with division title aspirations.

Winning within the division is important and the Browns went 3-2-1 against their AFC North brethren last year. Two of those victories were against the Bengals, but they count just the same. Baltimore lost a number of defensive starters and the Steelers will look much different now that Antonio Brown left town following Le’Veon Bell.

2019 Cleveland Browns Outlook

It looks like the Browns finally got it right by drafting Baker Mayfield first overall in 2018. He supplied the talent, confidence and swagger at the quarterback position that were missing for years. It was no coincidence that when he took over in Week 3 last season, the Browns ended their 19-game winless streak.

They also ended the tenure of beleaguered coach Hue Jackson midway through the season after losing three straight. It’s amazing he lasted as long as he did, but a change had to be made and Jackson was shown the door after winning just three times in his 40-game tenure. Staying in-house, the Browns named OC Freddie Kitchens head coach so he could continue developing Mayfield and the rest of the offense.

To set their young signal caller up for more success, the Browns made a huge move by trading for Odell Beckham Jr. Joining former college teammate and friend Jarvis Landry, the Browns have a potent set of receivers to stretch the field. David Njoku was utilized more following the departure of Jackson and Nick Chubb just missed rushing for 1,000 yards. The offense can put up massive numbers in 2019.

The Browns also addressed shortcomings on defense with the acquisitions of Olivier Vernon and Sheldon Richardson. Myles Garrett is there to wreak havoc on opposing QBs and Denzel Ward will solidify the back end as long as he stays concussion free. The biggest add is DC Steve Wilks, who put together solid units during his time in Carolina.

Plenty has to go right for the Browns to enjoy success. After all, they’ve had just two winning seasons since returning to the NFL in 1999. But this isn’t your mother’s Browns team. Mayfield possesses leadership qualities that will keep OBJ in the game, the team upgraded at the most important positions, and they have depth. They’re also in a good spot in a division that looks like it could have a down year. It’s time for fans in Cleveland to get excited. I am, and I’m taking the over on the Browns win total.
