A super flyweight title fight between undefeated champ Andrew Moloney and challenger Joshua Franco serves as the main event for Top Rank’s Tuesday card from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Moloney is perfect in 21 professional fights with two-thirds of those wins via knockout. Moloney is also a heavy favorite to retain the ‘regular’ super flyweight belt, which he won in November with a stoppage of Elton Dharry. Franco also packs a punch with half of his wins decided by a KO.  Bookmaker is offering a generous welcome bonus with a maximum of $1000.

The 12-round WBA super flyweight showdown between Andrew “The Monster” Moloney ( 21-0, 14 knockouts ) and Joshua “El Professor” Franco ( 16-1-2, 8 knockouts ) will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Tuesday, June 23, 2020. This is the main event on a card that features four other fights. The action begins at 8 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN.

Andrew Moloney vs. Joshua Franco Fight Preview

For the first time since its post-coronavirus return Top Rank will feature a title bout, the first in men’s boxing since February. It’s been several months but with boxing on lockdown like most every other sport, the opportunities for an epic clash were minimized. Not that this fight will be epic, but it sure has potential with fighters eager to show their stuff.

Moloney has yet to taste defeat in his professional career. He holds the WBA “regular” super flyweight strap, which is really a title in name only. Roman Gonzalez is recognized at the WBA “super” champion. Moloney certainly deserves the recognition he’s receiving, though.

Beating Dharry last time out for his fourth straight stoppage victory was a gut check moment for the Australian. The back and forth affair looked like it could have gone either way before Moloney ended the contest in the eighth round delivering enough punishment forcing Dharry to concede. Moloney was ranked No. 1 by the WBA at the time winning the super flyweight title.

The bout proved that, despite the perfect record, there are holes in Moloney’s game. A prohibitive favorite, Moloney was in trouble in the middle rounds stunned by a vicious uppercut that took him to the floor. It appeared as though Moloney’s knee touched the mat which should have been scored a knockdown for Dharry, but the referee missed the call.

Showing the heart of a champion, Moloney regrouped delivering a number of blows in the sixth round that eventually turned the bout in his favor. Landing jabs to the face of his opponent, Moloney closed Dharry’s right eye and the bout was eventually stopped after eight rounds.

You don’t often see the same fighters duke it out in consecutive fights let alone three in a row. Franco and Oscar Negrete did just that battling to a pair of split draws sandwiched around a Franco split decision victory. During those battles Franco showed he can dish out the punches as well as take them.

An unheralded fighter, Franco’s lone defeat was a controversial TKO to Lucas Leone a little over two years ago. He won his first 13 fights, including a unanimous decision over Oscar Mojica to claim the vacant WBC youth silver super flyweight title in 2017. A win and two draws against former world challenger Negrete and stopping Jose Alejandro Burgos in the ninth round in his last fight earned Franco an opportunity to fight for a title.

Franco is unbeaten in his last five fights since losing to Leone. Franco appeared to be comfortably ahead in that bout before taking a shot to the head that stunned him. The ring official immediately stopped the fight. “The loss did open my eyes. I was able to come back strong and that’s what counts,” Franco said.

Bet Andrew Moloney vs. Joshua Franco at BookMaker

Moloney is a considerable favorite on the opening odds but this fight is going to be much closer than the numbers project. Franco is tough having faced quality opponents in his last several bouts. Moloney is the big favorite for a reason, though. He is a more polished fighter and packs the power that will wear down Franco in the later rounds. Moloney is unpredictable and he plays down to his competition as evidenced in his last fight. Franco needs a relentless attack and has to stay on his feet. I don’t think that’s going to happen against a higher quality opponent.

Iowa State: Are They The Underdogs To Look For In March Madness?

They may be defined as “underdogs” or “Cinderella teams”, a term that is usually saved for teams that have little to no chance of winning even a single game during the NCAA Tournament. Teams like Loyola Marymount (1990), George Mason (2006), Davidson (2008), VCU (2011), UConn (2014), and Loyola Chicago (2018) come to mind when conversations turn toward the most surprising tournament runs in recent memory.
