Penn State vs. Michigan Early Observations

From AthlonSports.com: "The last two meetings in this series weren’t close on the scoreboard. Michigan won 49-10 in 2016, with Penn State winning 42-13 last fall. It’s unlikely the 2018 matchup will be a repeat of those scores. Look for a much closer game this season, but the Wolverines seem to be peaking at the right time. Patterson will be efficient, as Michigan’s ground game gets cranked up in the second half. McSorley’s mobility is worth monitoring against one of the nation’s top defenses. If he can’t move in the pocket or is limited, that’s a huge setback for Penn State’s offense. The guess here is McSorley makes enough plays to keep the Nittany Lions within striking distance most of the game, but Michigan is simply better this season, as Harbaugh’s team crosses another victory off on its revenge tour.  Prediction: Michigan 31, Penn State 20"

Penn State So Far

From ESPN.com:  “It'd be easy to say Penn State has been unlucky, but more than anything, the Lions have simply struggled to close out games. They had Ohio State and Michigan State on the ropes in the fourth quarter but couldn't get the job done, and they nearly fell apart in wins over App State, Indiana and Iowa, too.

“What's left to play for: There's a good case to be made that Penn State is the best of the two-loss programs, so perhaps if enough chaos occurs elsewhere, the Lions have a glimmer of hope. Still, FPI gives Penn State less than a 1 percent chance to win its division, which all but ensures an offseason of talk about James Franklin's late-game collapses. Some of that noise can be canceled out by a strong finish, beginning this week with a showdown against Michigan.”

Michigan So Far

No team's playoff position improved in Week 7 more than Michigan. The Wolverines are now the sixth most likely team to reach the playoff, narrowly ahead of Oklahoma.
