Matthew Stafford, the Rams quarterback, is finishing his first season in Los Angeles. He spent the first 12 years of his NFL career with the Detroit Lions.  He had made three Playoff appearances with the Lions, never advancing. Stafford was never really offered opportunities with the Lions.  At times during the Matthew Stafford Era, the Lions were among the worst teams in the league.

Stafford says he’s playing for Lions fans, ex-teammates after tough years prepared him for Super Bowl.

“I think just the ability to overcome adversity,” he said. “I know that sounds cliché, but there was plenty of times in Detroit where we were having a tough stretch of games, or I was having a tough quarter, a tough half, whatever it was, and being able to just trust yourself, trust your preparation and go to work, and continue to work, trust your teammates and all that kind of stuff. I still feel that way, and think that way today.

“We had a tough stretch in our season in the month of November, where we didn’t win a football game. Lost three in a row there, I didn’t play particularly good football. But we just continued to work. We continue to trust each other, continue to understand that the process of us going to work every single day is what’s going to get us out of that. And I’m hoping that if I bring that attitude and if I helped turn one guy’s attitude on this team, maybe it helped us get to this point. But that’s things that you don’t really learn unless you go through some tough times, some tough adversity, and there were some times in Detroit that really taught me that and I’ve carried it with me.”
