QB Woes

Signed in the offseason to back up Matt Ryan in 2021, AJ McCarron suffered a knee injury in a loss to Miami during their preseason game and the extent of that injury was not immediately known.

Coach Arthur Smith did not seem confident this would turn out well.

“I really feel for AJ McCarron,” Smith said. “Anytime something like that happens -- it’s non-contact -- it’s tough, when you know what these guys put into it. And so I feel for AJ. We’ll, obviously, get the MRI to confirm. He’s heartbroken. He had bounced back, and he was out there fighting, fighting for his team and trying to get the extra yards.

“I understand injuries are part of the game, but there’s a still human element, and so I feel for AJ.”

The Falcons were already hurting in the backup quarterback position entering this season.

Atlanta opens the 2021 regular season as a -3.5 home favorite versus Philadelphia.

They are priced at -115 on both the OVER and UNDER 8.5 regular season wins.

Falcons Rookie Feleipe Franks' Stock Down After Poor Showing in Miami

Franks opportunity to prove himself in the wake of McCarron's departure didn't quite materialize as he competed four of nine passes for only 46 yards with an interception.

The young QB did find wide receiver Tajae Sharpe in the end zone but the pass was dropped. On the ground, Franks did go for 32 yards on three carries.

After completing six of eight passes for 62 yards in his first preseason games, the odds of Franks making the final roster appear to be slim.
