The Angels (35-1 odds to win the World Series) have not fared well against the Athletics (25-1 to win the World Series) of late.  They have only won two of ten recent meetings between the California clubs.  The Angels are 3-9 in the last 12 meetings in Oakland.

The Angels are 16-37 in their last 53 overall and Angels are 5-14 in their last 19 during game 1 of a series.

The A's are 37-14 in their last 51 games vs. a left-handed starter.

Their Game 1 of the series opened with a line of Oakland -129 to -131.

“I think getting off to a decent or good start is going to be very important just for morale and the ability to stay engaged mentally,” Angels manager Joe Maddon said. “It’s the kind of typical stuff you talk about, but when you talk about this stuff in a 162-game season, there’s recovery time. You know  you’re going to go through some really bad moments and some really great moments. There’s not a lot of time to recover from the bad moments right now.”

The shortened season may work in favor of teams like the Angels as there will likely be some randomness.  During the 2019, for example, the Angels were a 91-loss team when the season ended, but during their best 60-game stretch they were 34-26.  The shorter season, however, also magnifies scheduling quirks.

The Athletics are favored to win 33.5 regular season games while the Angels are expected to win Under 31.5.
