Canning held opponents to a .235 average and posted 96 strikeouts in 90 1/3 innings as a rookie last year. He recorded an ERA of 5.30 on the road, despite a strong effort at Oakland on May 29, 2019, when he yielded a run and three hits in six frames. Ramon Laureano went 4-for-6 with two home runs and two doubles against the 24-year-old Canning last season.
