The 2023 Preakness Stakes morning odds saw very minuscule changes of around a quarter to a half a point. Mage can now be gotten for a slightly better price of -125 compared to -140.
Perform sees the biggest move in price, down from +1800 to +1600.
The field was down to just seven horses after the Brad Cox-trained First Mission was scratched from the Preakness on the advice of veterinarians within 36 hours of the race.
“They thought that he was maybe not quite 100% on his left hind and tried to figure that out, do some diagnostics, something on the track there, which was difficult to do,” Banahan told The Associated Press in a phone interview. “The veterinary scrutiny is very heightened on the big days. Obviously they saw something that they were concerned about. … Brad is conservative and cautious, as well. When they thought that there was maybe a little issue, we said we’d just have to collaborate with them and go with their advice.”
A total of five horses were scratched from this year's Kentucky Derby.
So far, this year's Triple Crown has been marred by a series of deaths leading up to the Derby.
Scandal-plagued Bob Baffert is set to return after a lengthy suspension after his 2021 Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit tested positive for an illegal drug. He was ultimately disqualified. The final days of Baffert's suspension by Churchill Downs prevented him from entering any horses in this year's Kentucky Derby.
