Rory McIlroy is a slight favorite to win the Open Championship which begins on Thursday at Royal Liverpool. There is no question that McIlroy has the talent to win any event he enters but he faces some strong challengers including world #1 Adam Scott, #2 Henrik Stenson and of course Tiger Woods. Normally Tiger would be favored but he is coming back from injury and he has looked nowhere near his former self. He is still popular though so oddsmakers have him listed as the co-second choice along with Scott, Stenson and Martin Kaymer.

Here is a look at the tournament and British Open picks.

Top Contenders

In most majors you can put a lot of players in the "contender" category because all of the top players in the world are in the field. McIlroy is the favorite but you can make a case for McIlroy, Scott, Stenson and Kaymer. It is hard to make a case for Tiger based on how he played two weeks ago at Congressional when he didn't even make the cut. Also in the mix could be Justin Rose, defending champion Phil Mickelson and Graeme McDowell.

Overdue

There are a few golfers who are listed just outside the top group who are way overdue for a big win. They are Jason Day, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia. You can get any one of those three at odds of about 25-1. I think you can put Dustin Johnson, Luke Donald, Matt Kuchar and Ian Poulter into this category as well and they are all about 30-1.

British Open Predictions

It would not surprise me to see McIlroy win but I still don't know if he can avoid mistakes. Adam Scott has a little more value and he has proven he can win big events. "I have fond memories of Royal Liverpool, it was my first top-ten at The Open and I hope this year I am again in the hunt on Sunday," said Scott. For a longshot, how about taking Angel Cabrera at odds of about 40-1? He finished 7th when this event was held at Royal Liverpool back in 2006 and he is coming off a win last week.
