Nate Diaz (14-7-0) vs. Donald Cerrone (17-3-0)

Sportsbook.com Line: Cerrone -285, Diaz +225

Two submission artists take the octagon on UFC 141’s main card with lightweights Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone squaring off.

Diaz has competed as both a lightweight and welterweight in his career, returning back to the lightweight division in his most recent match, an armbar submission over Takanori Gomi. Cerrone has won six consecutive fights including his first four as a part of UFC, most recently with a rear naked choke submission over Dennis Siver. Prior to Diaz’s win over Gomi he struggled, with two consecutive losses and five defeats in an eight-fight span. That rough stretch has bettors down on him, but returning as a lightweight for the second time he should be surprisingly competitive with Cerrone.

Diaz (14-7-0) has earned 10 of his 14 career wins via submission with those making up 49% of his attacks. Still, he supplements that with a strong striking background with boxing and Jiu-Jitsu that set up his attacks. The champion of The Ultimate Fighter 5, Diaz has earned fight of the night honor four times and submission of the night honors on three occasions in his time on the UFC circuit. His victory over Gomi was an easy one, coming in the first round, so play on Diaz in this follow-up performance as a lightweight.

Cerrone (17-3-0) is understandably the favorite in this match, entering the battle on a strong winning streak over respectable opponents. Like Diaz, he rules through submission with 13 of his 17 victories coming that way, and with an even heavier 58% skill percentage devoted to submissions. His submission tactics stem from his Muay Thai background, where he also has many achievements, in addition to Jiu Jitsu and wrestling. Cerrone is a great fighter, but the “Cowboy” could have trouble with a foe sporting equally strong submission skills.
