The Hill Asks "Will Trump Burn it All Down" as DeSantis Inching Towards Favorite Status

With a flurry of bets coming in on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis resulting in his 2024 U.S. Presidential odds to shorten at SportsBetting.ag over the past week.  January 6 committee hearings appear to be chipping away at some of former U.S. President Donald Trump's support among Republican voters, and especially among self-declared Independents.  61% of the later now believe the attacks on the U.S. Capitol last year were planned, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.

But The Hill's opinion contributor, Max Burns, believes that it is fellow Republicans, once supported by Trump, who may push the former President over the edge.

Burns notes that Pennsylvania Republican Senate candidate Mehmet Oz has scrubbed mentions of Trump from his website and social media platforms.  Trump had endorsed Oz for the GOP primary in that state.

With DeSantis' star growing brighter and more Republicans willing to distance themselves from Trump, Burns suggests that the GOP  "will face an enraged, burn-it-all-down Trump in the run-up to the 2024 elections".

SportsBetting.ag odds on DeSantis to be elected as the 47th President of the United States moved from 5-1 to 9-2 following entrepreneur Elon Musk's quiet support for the Florida Governor last week.  Musk remarked that he might vote for DeSantis.

The GOP nominee odds moved in favor of DeSantis as well: From 3-1 to 5-2.

For his part, Trump has shared a poll showing he would beat DeSantis via his Truth Social platform.

That collection of national polls compiled by the Polling USA Twitter account showed Trump's average polling stood at 54 percent, with the Florida governor a distant second on 16 percent.  But that poll was released back in January.  Trump was still favored to be re-elected in 2024.
