Van der Sloot Appears in Court

Joran van der Sloot, the Dutchman accused of murdering college student Stefanie Flores while he attended the Latin American Poker Tour in Lima Peru, was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

A closed door hearing will take place at Peru’s notorious Castro Castro Prison where van der Sloot is currently being held.

Peruvian authorities have yet to file formal charges against the 23-year-old. Once the discovery phase of the case ends, prosecutors will file charges and a trial date will be set. His attorney, Maximo Altez, resigned last week for unspecified reasons.

Flores had been brutally beaten in a hotel room registered to van der Sloot in May of 2010 after the two were seen on surveillance tape playing cards at a local casino. The Dutchman is alleged to have taken money and credit cards from her wallet then fled to Chile where he was subsequently captured.

Van der Sloot is also a primary suspect in the disappearance of High School grad Natalie Holloway in Aruba more than six years ago.
