Opening statements were heard Tuesday in the double-murder trial Ernest Scherer III.  He is accused of brutally murdering his parents, Ernest Scherer, Jr. and Charlene Abendroth, in their Castlewood Country Club back in March of 2008.

The jury consisted of five men and seven women.  The younger Scherer is alleged to have killed his parents as a means of obtaining a $1.5 million inheritance.  Ernest III had approached his father for a loan just weeks before the murders.

Gripping a Nike Ripken youth baseball bat, similar to the murder weapon used to bludgeon the couple, prosecutor Michael Nieto chronicled back to the murder suspect’s birth, "Little did they (Ernest Scherer III’s parents) know some 29 years later, that baby would grow into, and the evidence will show he grew into, a narcissistic sociopath killer."

A Chevrolet Camaro, similar to the one owned by the son, was captured on surveillance tape the night of the murder. Prosecutors are expected to call to the state a Camaro expert to testify regarding the rarity of that particular model of car.

Scherer III wore khaki pants, a pale shirt and a tie while in the courtroom.
