The numbers are in and they are good with 6598 entrants taking part in the 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event. Still, that is down from last year’s 6,865 players. Organizers had hoped for a record number of entries this year. Instead, the 2012 Main Event ranks as the 5th largest to date. The largest Main Event occurred in 2006 when Jamie Gold was awarded what had been the most money ever in a poker tournament until last week’s Big One For One Drop.
The overall news for this year’s WSOP was pretty good, however. It was revealed Monday evening that the total prize pool for all 2012 events amounted to a whopping $222,035,192, which was the largest ever and a 15.6 percent increase over last year’s total.
No doubt the inaugural $1 million buy-in Big One For One Drop event played a major role in bulking up these numbers. The prize pool for this event alone totaled $42,666,672. Compare that to the Main Event with a prize pool of $62,021,200 and one can see what an impact the One Drop event had on this year’s World Series of Poker.
