Paddy O'Prado was not among the single digit favorites at online betting sites the likes of Bookmaker.com. But suddenly the ominous weather forecast in Louisiville for Saturday's Kentucky Derby race has begun to change things. Paddy O'Prado is said to be one of the best horses when it comes to running in mud and muck.
The National Weather Service says 1 to 1½ inches of rain is possible. If so, that would be the most rain on Derby Day since 1.19 inches fell in 1929. The wettest Derby Day was in 1918, when 2.31 inches fell.
"Depending on timing, this could turn out to be a miserable Derby," said Mike Callahan, a hydrologist for the weather service. "I would say the track is going to be pretty muddy."
A flash flood watch is already in effect for the region.
Paddy O'Prado's +1500 odds would pay out $150 for every $10 bet as of press time late Thursday night.
"Gambling911.com suggests locking these odds in now as they are sure to be slashed," says Senior Sports Reporter, Don Shapiro.
Paddy O'Prado turned in one of the fastest pre-Derby workouts when he sped 5 furlongs in 58.4 seconds on a muddy track on April 23.
"He worked really well in the slop," trainer Dale Romans said. "I don't think it's going to back him up at all. There's a good chance it's going to move him up."
Dublin is also said to race well in slop. He was listed at +1500 odds as well but no horse has ever won starting in his post position.
