According to a report in eGaming Review Magazine online, the UK betting industry is now valued at £6bn according to Deloitte and employs a whopping 100,000 people.

The figures are equivalent to 0.5% of UK gross domestic product (GDP) and 0.3% of total UK employment, respectively.

While some have questioned the viability of pushing for legalized online gambling in the US during a period of economic uncertainty, the UK numbers should help to boost support for the need to legalize Internet poker, sports betting and casino Web gambling whether it be on the state or federal level.

Ladbrokes chief executive Christopher Bell said of the UK report: "This report comes at a crucial time for the industry and will help inform the Government and stakeholders about the important contribution the industry makes to employment and taxation in these difficult economic times. We hope it will contribute towards more informed policy making and help remove much of the uncertainty that has surrounded the taxation and regulation of our industry in recent years."
