If the election were held today, an amendment to the New Jersey Constitution allowing gambling on sporting events in Atlantic City casinos and at the state's race tracks would easily win approval, according to a new Rutgers-Eagleton Poll released Wednesday.

Rutgers-Eagleton Poll results: NJ sports betting vote

"Sports betting can transform Atlantic City from a gambling site to a tourist destination and attract much needed new investment to change a tired city into a vibrant one," said state Sen. Ray Lesniak (D., Union), who filed the original lawsuit two years ago to overturn the federal law and the leading proponent for sports betting in the legislature.

The poll was taken among 903 adults, including a sample of 821 registered voters and 603 likely voters from Oct. 6-9. The sample of likely voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.0 percentage points, while the registered voter sample has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
