Money fears are said to be behind approximately 25 percent of all marriage breakups, a study has revealed.

John Farrelly, Accord director of counselling, said the recession continued to affect marriage and family, with people feeling they are beginning to lose control of their lives.

"In the counselling rooms, families are coming to understand that their ability to care for each other and their family is the most important thing in their lives," he said.

Online gambling and time spent online is also a major source of conflict, according to Farrelly.

ccord found that 7pc of couples seeking help during the first half of this year blamed internet usage and time spent in cyberspace as their primary problem.

Key areas causing concern were internet gambling, infidelity and partners spending too much time online rather than with their spouse.

Internet gambling has become a key conflict area and a lack of regulation made it easy for vulnerable people to become addicted, Mr Farrelly said.

"The media image created by the gambling industry is that internet gambling is engaged in by smart, competent card sharks who pit their wits against each other," he said.

Drugs was also a factor for many separations the study revealed.

Moral to the story:  Don't get married.
